What a beautifully crated game. I'm almost ashamed that I got it at a discount. Will infidelity be buying the expansion at full asking price as soon as possible.
[Game In Development Review]
I would like to say thanks to the developers of this game - it is beautiful and I enjoy playing it.
The game itself is really easy to get a hang of, but it will not be one to hold your hand. You are in space and there are those who will want to kill you and they will not show mercy. You are no superman and picking fights will get you killed very quickly, especially at the beginning when you have the initial crappy gear you start out with. Clearing a stage of enemies fully is likely reserved to far better pilots than most players.
One thing that I have to say is very annoying, is that when you find good gear, but subsequently get killed, the gear is lost. There are perks you can buy that allow you to find your previous killed wreck and try to recover gear, but its unreliable and very frustrating when that happens. It could be I did not play far enough, but when you do eventually get killed in the game, you start out right at the beginning with the same crappy load-out every time.
The above issue wouldn't be so bad if some balancing issues were resolved. If you try to be careful and find all the gear in an area to try to give yourself a fighting chance, an enemy frigate would jump next to you and wipe the floor with your ship, no matter how good you are. This happens even early on in the game which is frustrating.
Fun game tho
The Good:
- Graphics are great but not too taxing - runs well on my ageing HD5850 video card
- 4X controls are easy and intuitive on keyboard, plus controller support with vibration
- UI is very simple and easy to use - clean, visual, layout and design
- Different weapons require different strategy
- Combat is fast and satisfying (if you win)
- The ship has components that can be crippled (i.e. engines get damaged)
The Bad:
- When you die, you start from the beginning - components can and will disappear
- Balancing issues still need to be worked out, especially in the first sectors where you have no good gear
I love space simulators like X series, and i like games like Binding of Isaac and Rouge Legacy. This game is a little bit of both. The combat feels awesome fast pace and yet intuitive sometimes it can be hard (mainly when you fight too many ships).
It is rougelike so most of your stuff disappears after death. But permament ship upgrade mechanic always gives you this urge to try harder to unlock more. Everspace looks amazing and on my shitty 5-6 year old laptop game runs flawlessly on medium ofcourse.
