Rogue Legacy in Space

I don't feel like a star rating system is valid. A game can be 5/5 at $5, and a 2/5 at a $60 price point. At this stage in development I would give this game a 5/5 at $15 price point with the current feature set. The gameplay is very similar to Rogue Legacy, you make it as far as possible in a game run, you die, and you have currency to buy generic upgrades that roll over to your next run. The equipment you find does not carry over. The level diversity is great, I don't think I have seen the same level twice and you are going to need to make/burn probes to get any kind of value out of the levels you visit. It's fun to try to get everyone otu of the level before the aliens start teleporting in and you have to run. My main concern is with the combat. I don't feel like there is very much player skill involved. I feel like it mostly boils down to equipment level. I don't feel like I'm changing my tactics to match my equipment or my opponents. It's just basic space combat: Wiggle around and shoot your enemy. I find kiting the pirates and aliens to the merchant’s ships to be the best combat tactic, it's just feels dirty. This game is on the right track, it does not have in depth space combat, but if you are a fan of Rogue Legacy it's a fun buy.

Good so far, but little content.

Pros Game runs amazing with no loading screens. Cool ship designs. Perk system means every run will be a little less hard. Realism. (You can bait the Okkar over and make the G&B fight them for you ;) Combat feels great. Hard enough. AMAZING LOOKING GAME! Cons Very little content for a $30 price. Too hard to heal after taking damage, please make it so you can craft nano bots for a fairly cheap price. Weapon range is not shown to the player in an understandable way. (most weapons have a less than 2km range, but this is not told to you) Needs more types of hostile ships. Mines are too strong. Crashing does too much damage.

Better than most AAA, not even finished

Now, I might be biased towards this game since I'm an absolute sucker for all space-based Sci-Fi games, but this game has already provided more entertainment in just over 3 hours of playtime than most AAA games do in 15. As a long-time backer of Star Citizen, playing this has been extremely refreshing. The best way to describe this in a sentence is FTL crossed with Descent. It's sort of a 6DoF space shooter with a flight model that isn't exactly realistic, but rather the best middle-ground between fun and realistic. While I generall don't mind poor visuals in games, I do appreciate good visuals, and damn, this thing looks breathtaking even on the lowest of settings. Granted, I've only played the GoG version, so some of the gripes Kickstarter backers had have been fixed since. Whenever you die (and you will. A lot) the credits you've earned can be used to upgrade your ship, however, upon restarting, any unspent credits are lost. Upgrades are permanent, so if you upgrade thing x in run 1, die, upgrade thing y in run 2, both things x and y will be upgraded in run 3. Systems are pretty varied, though some of the basic building blocks that are repeated can be noticed after some time. As you progress through sectors, new set-pieces are introduced, as are new enemies and hazards. Combat is pretty punishing, but fun and smooth. Exploration is also a pretty important part, as it is easy to miss resources if you speed through a system, however that will leave you without the gear needed to survive later on. My only gripes are that currently the sector 1 setpieces aren't too varied, and after so much death going through it does get a bit boring, and there could be more ship customization. Overall, this was money very, very well spent. Save yourself $30 by buying this instead of a crap 60 buck over-hyped unoptimized AAA release, and have more fun too!

Old School meets New School

First, the game is brutal, you will die repeatedly. I'm talking like, give me another quarter repeatedly. This game has a curve set to the old school "get better or quit" mentality. However, it takes a bow to the new school in that with death comes the opportunity to buy incremental permanent upgrades for the next run. The graphics are beautiful, the controls fluid and the victories satisfying. All in all a good popcorn adventure space flyer meant for nothing more than the "I can get farther this run" mentality. Yes, there is a plot, but whether I make it through that is secondary to the fun of just basic blow them out of the sky shooting.

When you don't have time to play.

Most of the time a run last less than 30 minutes and a game can be saved at any time which is really nice if you only have only a little bit of time. You can also play it for hours if you want.
