I cant seem to get it to run well on my new gaming PC. I had this for a few years on my old PC that used Windows 10 and it worked great but I guess when I made the switch to Windows 11, the GOG version just doesnt work well, Im sorry to say.
Best flight sim ever for actually making you feel like a real pilot involved in a real conflict. I spent countless hours with this thing back in the late '90s-mid '00s, fantasizing about being a Brit aviator defending the home isle from German bomber attacks. (If this GOG version offers stock graphics, you will definitely want to update them from a modsite--this is from '98 after all--but other than that, you can't go wrong with this sim.)
Classic WW2 flight sim action, however I could not get nglide to work, and the slow performance of directx was not an option. I always received a black screen when exiting a flight which had to be ended with task manager. No amount of messing with the nglide settings fixed it and all resolutions were tried. I finally had to resort to a different glide wrapper, dgVoodoo2. It was easy to setup and now everything runs flawlessly at 60fps in a variety of missions. I own the disc and followed the manual install method out of curiosity, and got nglide working that way. Even then nglide was just OK but not nearly as fast as dgvoodoo2 in my experience. I'm no stranger to messing with old games to get them to run well, and I'm sticking with this version because of the fixes to movies etc, but I think it should have ran better out of the box.
Unlike 1942: Pacific Air War, this game is in fact playable on Windows 10 with either a joystick or gamepad. Don't bother with trying to rely on mouse or keyboard controls as they won't get you far in this game. I'm playing the Battle of Britain campaign which is great fun although very challenging. I still have so many mods for this saved from years ago I'm tempted to try adding these to the GoG version but afraid if I do I may break it :(
