Enter the Gungeon

Take Nuclear Throne's gun fights, Risk of Rain's loot, Binding of Isaac's levels layout... and you have Enter the Gungeon. A totally assumed Rogue-lite/bullet hell where anything is here to cause your untimely death. Difficulty resides in dodging dozen of glowing shots coming from enemies in complex rooms filled with many dangers: gaps, spikes, traps, tnt barrels or tables that you can use as temporary covers. Ammo management is still important but you only have to select the appropriate weapon you want to resupply, making things really easier especially in front of a game like Nuclear Throne. So you can stick with your favorite weapons without too much problems and it's really good. You can get 2 currency to buy items during your expeditions or after having died/succeeded to increase your item pool. Exploring the Gungeon gives you access to some items in the same vein of Risk of Rain. The more you find the more you can choose later in shops/levels. Weapons are numerous, around a hundred with weird effects like this rifle i found that launches dirty shirts or the crossbow that fires shotgun shells ! Nearly everything is destructible makings levels a huge warzone filled with emptied bullet casings and destroyed furniture among dead bodies. The game is nice and i really liked yogurt speech of monsters that gives an appealing touch to the overall: Yoshi's dino power! You can unlock few elements such as new npc to get more items/weapons available or shortcuts to deeper levels. The only rather average element of the game is the soundtrack that could have been better with less sound effects during music tracks. It makes music very noisy and breaks a bit the immersion and the pleasure to exterminate your enemies. Also consider that this game is horribly hard without any difficulty setting making co-op a very good addition. Enter the Gungeon is still a good game, less random than Nuclear Throne but slower than Risk of Rain.

So, this game is $15 base price. I have played, as of the time of writing this review, 144 hours according to Steam. Judge for yourself, but I think it's safe to say this game is more than reasonably priced. Loot distributions are very balanced based on effectiveness. For example, the Shelleton Key, which makes keys useless and unlocks everything for free, might appear only once every 75 runs whereas a more basic weapon like an AK47 might appear once every 3-5. The Dodge Roll, the game's most important mechanic which allows a player to be invincible while dodging through a bullet, isn't nearly as overpowered as it sounds. You are invulnerable during the first half of the dodge roll, but you are made completely motionless on the follow-through, so normal dodging is almost always preferred when possible. Story leaves a bit to be desired, but it's a roguelike. These games aren't built around story, it's all about the gameplay, which Gungeon executes incredibly well. With the Advanced Gungeons and Draguns update, they introduced a new mechanic: Synergies. While they aren't as flexible or sophisticated as TBoI synergies, they definitely add something to be excited about in any run. It works in sorta the same way: Get 2 related items, both become more powerful. For example, getting the Void Shotgun and the Void Core Assault Rifle makes one orbit you and fire on reload while the other is equipped. Synergies are great and all, but what really makes the game shine is its incredible amount of variety. The reason that a gun as common as the AK appears once every 5 or so runs is because of the sheer number of other guns you can find, all with their own unique twist. Don't be deterred by the game clips where there's a ton going on that's hard to keep track of, by the time you reach that point in the game you will have gotten used to it enough to understand. I've been waiting a long time for a game to come along and blow my mind, and this game has! What a great experience it has been fighting countless cute bullets and the puns! My god the puns are real in this game, so much taken from anything and everything and turned into great humour. IF your looking for a rogue-lite bulllet hell, roll a dodge-a-thon then this game is what you need! Doesnt rely on loot only like other rogue-lites but on pure skill and quick reaction times. Altho one quirk which stopped me giving this a 5 Star rating is after 60 hours of pure adrenaline fun finally beating the 4th chamber (yes im terrible but it don't stop me) running this game on 1920 x 1080p R8 Graphics card maxed out everything with no graphical slow downs at all, to get past the loading screen, with all out excitement to find the game drops to a terrible 18fps!!!! I MEAN WTF....why!!?! My deck can handle DayZ and to find the 5th chamber clocks my ram to the max and slows down and stutters to a total unplayable state especcialy in the bigger rooms ...Please fix this for a pixel art game there should be no slow down at All...other then this -Game-Breaking-Performance- in the End game, this game has been one of my favourite's in this genre and I feel it has let me down after so long getting to the 5th chamber to be let down terribly. Please DEVS...do your best to fix the performance issue for i feel i'm not the only one to have felt the Burn. Thanks ever so kindly and hope to see some kind of patch to correct this error.

When I first played Enter the Gungeon, before any updates, I did not like the game at all. It felt slow and while the aethstic and gameplay were great, each run took forever to start rolling. After the two updates, Supply Drop and Advanced Gungeons & Draguns, I could not be more addicted. The developers rebalanced the loot table and added hundreds of item synergies. This makes it exciting to pick up everything and anything as you never know what might have a synergy. I highly recommend this game to anyone who loves the formula of these style of games and also enjoys a bullet hell style challenge.
