Award-winning Passion Project
The game was first prototyped as an award-winning and much-loved student project. The original team has reformed and expanded as Fireplace Games to increase the scope, sweep and grandeur of En Garde!
This game is awesome! Short but sweet, with engaging and challenging combat (although Zadia was a spike in difficulty for sure!). The environmental combat feels super unique for a game like this, and even comes with some secrets! Try throwing a lantern at a grenadier.
It's really too bad this game didn't get more attention, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on these devs now.
Most of the game is great, until you run into the fencers who as part of their move set change the direction of your camera as part of their dash. The direction the camera is facing changes the direction of your attacks and the direction of your dodges. I have never played a game where there was no way to keep the enemy from manipulating your camera. I beat the game and the main villain is 100% the camera.
The good:
The gameplay is really fun and with a very good challenge even in normal difficulty.
combat with groups of enemies can be a bit frustrating but a lot of care was put into the gameplay.
Music and voice casting are pleasent even if nothing is very memorable.
The story is a lighthearted simple tale with a bit of humor.
The bad:
Not very optimized, but neither are the AAA games nowadays so maybe it's unfair to expect that from a Indie developer.
Suffers from the modern syndrome of "Ugly lesbian main character" that seems to be present in every game now. Doesn't bother me but I also don't see the point since all the other characters look great besides the playable character.
This game is a lot of fun, wrapped in a colorful world with funny character and a likeable heroine. Highly recommended for entertainment value and replayability in the arena
Not much to say, it is fun, and simple. Not a complex game, not trying to be one. It's pretty linear and short, so definitely look for a sale, but I liked it. I'm a huge fan of Zorro, so that helped.
