So far so good
Just way too many cutscenes. Combat's okay. Wil update if I finish the story

Feels 20 years old and not in a good way
First off, I've never played Suikoden. Everyone seems to have their opinion on whether or not this is a good successor to the series. I can't speak to that; only to whether or not it's good as a game released in 2024, and... it's not. The first thing that jumps out at you is the graphics. You have a beautifully-constructed 3D world, but all the characters are 2D sprites. Now that was a great trick on the original PlayStation, when the hardware wasn't good enough to render human bodies well. Today... it just feels badly out of place. There's a cuscene early on with Nowa and Seign sitting at a campfire. Beautifully-rendered PBR lighting and reflections on the slightly-shiny stone nearby... and two blocky guys made up of very noticeable pixels, who the lighting just does not look right on *at all!* You have no control over your camera. (Except on the world maps, where you do. So the devs did implement this; they just decided to deny it to you for 90% of the game!) And there are plenty of places where you have to walk through areas that are obscured because of stupid camera angles. Likewise, you have no control over the pacing. There is no way to skip cutscenes, or long battle animations. (Disgaea had this figured out 20 years ago. Why can't this studio do it today?) You have no control over the plot. The entire thing is on very, *very* noticeable rails. Almost every single war battle and duel battle is a scripted cutscene trying and failing to pretend it's a game with actual stakes. And there are really no stakes throughout. If a town falls to the Empire, for example, you can still walk around freely in it and even if you talk to the guards, they don't realize you're their Public Enemy #1! You have no idea what's going on. After playing all the way through, I still have only the slightest idea what a rune lens is, and no clue what primal lenses are or why they're so important. And the entire plot revolves around them! This game is a mess. Buy something else.

PS4 version
So I've only played the PS4 version. There are bugs, I fully expect them to be patched, and this is a *huge* game. There's nothing Game breaking, and You will replay it multiple times. So it's worth getting it now and coming back in a few months. It is an old school JRPG, so know what you're getting into. Some difficulty spikes and a few clunky menus. I didn't notice the clunky menus until somebody pointed it out to me so you might not either. Don't listen to the complaints about the translation, they're politically motivated, and I can't believe I'm typing that sentence in 2024... Will probably buy the Gog version before too long, if only to have a DRM free copy of the PC release, and to kick the devs a chunk of extra change. This is the 90s JRPG equivalent to Baldur's Gate 3. A sort of second coming we've all been waiting for.

2024 is no place for 90s game design
Let's start of with, this game is by no means a 1 star product. As you can see from some of the other reviews, they don't actually discuss the game at all and instead are riding the faux outrage train that is all the rage these days. Anyway, on to the game. It's nothing new or special. I backed the game as a big fan of Suikoden 1 and 2, but I didn't in my wildest dreams expect that they'd try to recreate that experience all the day down to the old school UI and inventory management. Even limiting the save system to certain dungeon checkpoints seems odd choice. It's not a terrible game, and if you were a big fan of Suikoden then you'll likely enjoy your time with it even with some of the odd game design choices. It'll definitely scratch an itch while you wait for the Suikoden 1 and 2 remasters to release. However, if you're looking for a game that redefines what a JRPG could be or that has a story that you'll not soon forget, I would recommend looking elsewhere. I'm hoping the modding community can do some magic to update this game to resemble something we'd expect from a 2024 title.
