Our story begins in one corner of Allraan, a tapestry of nations with diverse cultures and values.
By dint of sword, and by way of magical objects known as “rune-lenses,” the land’s history has been shaped by the alliances and aggressions of the humans, beastmen, elves, and desert people who live there.
The Galdean Empire has edged out other nations and discovered a technology that amplifies the rune-lenses’ magic.
Now, the Empire is scouring the continent for an artifact that will expand their power even further.
It is on one such expedition that Seign Kesling, a young and gifted imperial officer, and Nowa, a boy from a remote village, meet each other and become friends.
However, a twist of fate will soon drag them into the fires of war, and force them both to reexamine everything they believe to be right and true.

You can check over the internet several localization issues about this game. They are making a lot of nonsense modifications to make a niche game for a broader audience while losing their main market? I'm a backer so I can't sadly refund this, this isn't what I supported.
You've probably heard about the localization by now. Fans discovered that the localization was done by a company that practices DEI (similar to Sweet Baby Inc). Personally, I don't care about "woke" dialogue, but in this case the practices of the localizers have completely changed parts of the script to the point where it is almost completely different compared to the original Japanese script. It's disrespectful. The terrible dub doesn't help matters either.
There's a part where they literally question the gender identity of a boss they just defeated. Want to take a guess if that was part of the original script?
Beyond that, the bigger issues are the sheer amount of bugs the game launched with. The biggest being the encounter rate bug. The encounter rate is tied to your MONITORS REFRESH RATE, so if you're on a standard 144hz monitor or higher like most PC gamers, you will get almost no random encounters. There is a bug preventing recruitment of a certain character which can lock you out of the true ending. There are many more, but these are just the standouts. There are over 200 more bugs on the discord servers bug tracker.
There is so much this game does right and it really does feel like a true successor to Suikoden, but it was NOT ready to launch in this state. The fact that the encounter rate bug has been known since the backer beta and hasn't been fixed is just insane. PC users shouldn't be forced to hard cap their monitors refresh rate just to get the game to work right. What was the point of the backer beta if they just weren't going to fix all the issues that were discovered with it?
I'd still likely recommend this even with the terrible localization, but the game just isn't ready to play right now. Too many bugs, some of them potentially game breaking, and no ETA on when the most severe of these bugs are supposed to be fixed.
Few samples of a bigger mess: https://twitter.com/zakogdo/status/1782340520670527759
I purchased the game on GOG not knowing this till I started playing it, and reading the poor dialog text.
This is indefinable period. If this is the last game so be it. The audacity of ruining Murayama's vision infuriate many of us to no end. So at the very least we expect an unofficial fix, and the removal of the localization team names from the game.
I have very low expectations for an official fix. It'll be a miracle if it happens.
The game itself is good, and very nosthalgic of its predecesors, but the localized dialogs on the other hand... You understand if you're a fan of Murayama's work.
Sadly this game has been hit with poor a translation lots of western slang that has no place in the game along with the usual identitiy politics that are ham fistedly rammed into everything now days. This is a shame as the gamplay its quite good gsnd the 2d/3d graphics are charming. But the translation butchers the setting and story avoid or get on a very very deep discount.
I read the comments about localization and I just want to add the fact that french translators were very much respectful than English ones. The texts are great, and apart from the time to read the texts (a bit too long), this is a great jrpg.
