Description
Lilli is the best-behaved little girl in the world. She executes all her chores in a diligent manner, no matter how unfair they may be. Her innocent, imperturbable way of carrying out the orders of others has something both tragic and eerie about it. Any angry thoughts, any childlike disobedience is buried deep beneath a seemingly impenetrable surface of sweetness. But how long will these feelings stay hidden? And where do the friendly little gnomes come from that paint over everything unpleasant in Lilli’s vicinity with a pleasant pink color? Are they real or just a product of her subconscious? Find out in Edna & Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes!

Fun, very different feel from Breakout

I liked that this game didn't lose the darkness from the first -- it actually gets wonderfully darker -- and I found the Harvey mechanics in this game very interesting and better used than the Harvey mechanics in the first game. In place of the heart that Edna brought to the first game, though, we get some vicious saccharine bitterness through Lilli. I really appreciated that bitterness, and although I initially disliked the narrator as a replacement for Edna's narration, I wound up enjoying how the narrator and Lilli played off each other. Still, it's a lot harder to drive a game with bitterness than with heart, and if you don't have some bitterness in your own heart this game just may not work for you. This particularly hits hard at the characters, who are similarly shallow to those in the first game (many were present in the first game too). Where the first game added value to these shallow characters through Edna's compassion and capacity to engage with them where they are at, in this game the NPCs are mostly just environmental objects to interact with. That works for the story they're telling here, and for the bitterness angle, but it's a harder story to drive and the game suffers some for it. One of the biggest changes from Breakout to this game is the loss of rewarding of experimentation. Probably after the first game the designers decided to never again create a unique response for nearly every single possible way to interact with or combine objects and the environment, but that was one of the shining lights of the first game and its loss in this game was significant. I'm glad I played both, but if I could only play one, it'd definitely be Breakout.

Not for everybody, but great

If you like the early works of Sir Peter Jackson, you will probably love this game. It is an odd mix of hilarious splatter, psychological horror, and a melancholic story. However, some people might be put off by the unfair puzzles, the gratuitous brutality, and the occasional breaking of the fourth wall.

Nothing for the light hearted, but great

Okay, so, if you played the first game, you'll note that the overall mood is much more cynical and dark. Some reviewers complain about this, but this is part of the game. It's basically in the realms of "Death Becomes Her", regarding its twisted humor. The innocent protagonist Lilli (so cute, and soooo innocent) basically kills and murders people, almost always out of accident or lack of alternatives. This is shown by gnomes, painting the crime scenes pink (i.e. her subconscious hiding away the gruesome stuff). There is not a drop of blood shown in the game... and that's just because Lilli is a little girl, and she's innocent in her mind. This alone is pure genius :-D Edna serves as a side character most of the time, sharing the same dark humor and love for destruction as Lilli. Gameplay improved much since The Breakout, I did find it quite pleasant to play. Audio is excellent (the German version at least), graphics are typical Edna-style. You like it or you hate it. Overall: This one features dark humor, cynical satire and a good share of social commentary. It's not everybodys cup of tea, and I doesn't want to be. And that's fine with me, I love dark humor.

truly an original!

I feel obliged to write a review about this game since it was the somewhat most inventive and original adventure I have seen in a long while! I loved it, and the special mood it was carrying... :) That being said it is far from being flawless. - The first chapter is annoyingly morbid story-wise. The German speaker exaggerates the sarcastic voicing! In fact this made me almost quit the game. - Some animations seem unfinished - The ending really sucks (all three choices) + The combination of sound/music/artwork/animation/story creates a very dense atmosphere which I believe I haven't had experienced every since I've played Monkey Island 1! + The plot is very surreal and weird - in a good way + I loved the puzzles and ideas. For some reason I did never feel bored when I couldn't find the solution immediately. Usually I am very impatient and look up walkthrough solutions very often, but not here. It felt always straight forward and there were maybe three or four occasions where I decided to cheat. + The setting of a mental home suits an adventure very well + Dialogues and puzzles were great, mostly + The game play felt linear, but the story was unpredictable, especially due to the way how Lilly surmounts the psychic traumas + The artwork is very beautiful + Some humour is really great, e.g. the role play scene I enjoyed it very much that's why I rate it 5 stars. BTW I played this with my 9yrs old daughter while censoring out the most terrible scenes from Chapter 1.

Insane fun.

Edna & Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes is the sequel of Edna and Harvey: The Breakout and it's a great adventure game as well. The art of this game has greatly improved from the first game. The narrator's dialogue is so clever and funny that it reminds me of LucasArts's old adventure games. The characters are very memorable and the voices are well done. We need more adventure games like this. A word of warning though, the ending will leave you with a lot of questions that may never get answered and this game is far darker than the first game.
