The year is 2140. After numerous wars and several environmental disasters, only two world powers remain; the United Civilized States (UCS) covering the American continent, Western Europe and North Africa, and the Eurasian Dynasty (ED) covering the coherent landmasses of Eastern Europe and Asia.
The damage caused by the long wars led both world powers to evacuate the population to recently built underground cities. Australia and most parts of Africa were sacrificed during the long wars, which lasted several decades. Highly toxic biological and chemical weapons were developed on these continents, leaving them so badly contaminated, that no human life can survive there. Most of the world's population forgot that this land ever existed.
Conflicts between UCS and the ED escalated and became the final world war. This war will decide who will get the last of the available natural resources and ultimately rule the world.

This RTS is solid. The controls work smoothly and the interface isn't clunky or complicated. I liked the distinction between the two armies' units. They aren't just slightly altered copies of each other like in most old school RTS games. There are also a lot of missions to play through. The only gripe I have about this game is that there was very little narrative to the missions. If you're looking for a solid RTS that takes you from mission to mission without a plot, then this game is for you.
This game has really never been heard of by anyone. It came out after C&C1 and I think it tried to compete with it but came nowhere close, however, it does give you fun but I am now listing the reasons why it does not have 5 stars.
1. All about massing up huge numbers of vehicles and troops, no real strategy in that. In C&C1 you had to think and apply different tactics for example, here, just build a lot of vehicles and throw them into the enemy. For me = NOT FUN.
2. Horrible voice acting. Every single unit pretty much says the same two things over and over.
3. Sound/Music does not fit at all. Sure, in the loooong missions the soft classic jazz helps you stay calm and relaxed but when it is time to attack with your HUGE army, listening to soft jazz is rather, well... you decide. I mean, you sit with your girlfriend on a couch with a glass of red wine you don't listen to heavy metal either, right ?
4. Horrible when engaging air units. Your troops will stay put when air targets bombard them so you have to select them and then an air unit which is hard to do as they swirl around real fast in the air and it is annoying frankly.
5. Mission objectives are boring. It is pretty much : Destroy all structures and units except the laboratory. Next mission, destroy all structures except the powerplant and the rafinery. Next mission, destroy all structures and units. Next mission, destroy all structures except the command center. And so on. There is no strategic mission objective, it is all to amount a mass horde of troops and destroy all.
6. Cut-scene movies and intro movie and ending... do yourself a favor and just skip all of it. Imagine spending hours and hours and the end movie goes for 20 seconds and is ridiculous.
Now the good.
With the expansion pack, I did find they tried to add some tactics into it. When you have to cross an ocean on Hovercrafts and find a strategic point to land your troops and armor and then systematically destroy one turret after the next to get to their main stronghold, but again, that is it right there, not much more than that it gets to tactics.
A lot of different units.
Great explosions for a game that old. Much better than in C&C1. Here you hear the armor burn and crack and sizzle before exploding.
That is it. I do not recommend this game to be frank, but if you crazy about RTS games, you should give it at least a try.
Yes, I love the original game that's why I bought this version and hope to play it again on the new platform. But guess what, the AI is sucked, it's just not working...can I ask for return me the money ! : (
This was one of the first RTS games I ever played on the old computer of my brother. I had very fond memories of the game, and when I saw it was available on GOG, I though I would give it a shot for the nostalgia. I was aware of the reviews that pointed out at the borken ai in the hd version, but since it included the DOS, I tought it wouldn't be too bad. However, the DOS version is extremely laggy and almost unplayable preformance wise. Maybe there's a way to fix this, but I'm not aware of it at least (haven't found anything on the internet). The AI in the HD version literally does NOTHING, even on the hardest level. It just stands there and waits to be attacked. Doesn't even produce any units on its own. Great Game, but the publishers managed it to fudge it up. If they at least fixed the DOS version.....
Quite how Earth 2140 managed to make it as a Good Old Game is beyond me. If I hadn't picked this up as part of the weekend promo, I would have been thoroughly disappointed. For all the good of the fairly generic storyline, the two bland factions (mechs and robots vs. androids and tanks), the biggest let down had to be the playability - this is really just an inferior clone of Command and Conquer. Apparently they tried to do something novel with the idea of generals - getting the AI to take control of your units to help in battle, but this is poorly implemented: The generals feature actually replaces the generic AI that units have, so you have a choice, let the vastly inferior AI play for you, or babysit every damn one of the units under your teams command, as they won't even so much as retaliate without your say so, and to make it even more awkward, you cannot control teams that are under the control of a general without first removing the general, giving them the order, and then setting the general back up - not really something you want to be doing in the middle of a heated battle. All in all, unless you are a rabid RTS fan, avoid this otherwise you will just be disappointed by it's lack of playability. I just hope the sequals are better than this...
