Only the slow build up in campaign mode is a bit.. But it's a very good game.
Been gaming it since i bought it in here, it's actually making me put AOW, MOM, and Civ 4 & 5 aside.
Looking forward to the upcoming new version !
So what do I have to say about this game....hmmm. First of all by the time you get to the Title Screen you can already tell that the music is scratchy and it continues like this throughout the game. The same process with the sound effects. Next is the mouse movements which seem slow and cumbersome. Sure they get you to where you want to go and what you want to do. But it could be polished more.
Now comes the difficulty of the game. It is extremely hard. By the time you get past the tutorial and on the astral plain to the shards an on you first actual "mission" you will have a tough time. By the time you have your first hero. The enemy will have 2 and that is just at the Beginner level. Want a second hero? That will cost you 500 gold coins out of 1000 of which is very little considering you have to improve your town. Then you have to train your heroes to rise them up to competent level. Lets say you have one warrior and one commander. The warrior would naturally excel faster because he is a tank. While the commander will take awhile because while he can be just as competent he is weak in the beginning. After you have trained your heroes you send them off to nearby towns to conquer them only to find out most of them have already been conquered by 6. Yes 6 enemy heroes who have invaded and advanced most other towns by the time you try your hardest to wipe out the enemy. You are too late and he has already conquered your home province.
It is a good turn based game with minimalistic graphics. As a turn based enthusiast, I don't worry about that much. Also it has a really amazing big scope with many possibilities.
What I am really missing is a good background story. The background story that is contained is more a generic container for fighting everywhere. But not much flesh for the people who want also to be inspired ....
I also can't see that the campaign is a really campaign, it seams to be more like an tutorial.
Also (as much I could see from my experiences of two days) the choice of different unit types is rather limited. That would be the biggest drawback of course for those who don't care about background stories.
Also what I did not like is, that after a while the hero is so decisive for the play, that the other units are nearly neglectable, even when they also can grow in experience -- but their power grows so slow and they are so fast killed, that building up an army can be very very frustrating.
Only three points from my side, because of the lacking background and the limited unit types. Also much to develop for the hero -- but the army is just very limited. So, 5 stars minus two (1 background, 1 unit types). No minus for the graphics, since it is ok for an indie game.
