Do you like PB&J? Puppies? Halloween? Warm apple pie on a cool day? Then you'll love DUSK!
Oh, what do all these things have to do with a horror-themed boomshoot that has compelling story, smooth weapons, and excellent controls? Nothing, because DUSK is even BETTER than puppies and all the rest.
This is quintessential BOOMSHOOT. If this isn't activating your almonds and setting off neurons then I don't know what else to add. Even at full price this game is worth it, but on sale it should be every FPS-lover's nobrainer purchase!
Even though I had to return this game, I can still highly recommend it. Initially I tried to play this game on my MacBook Pro, but there is apparently a low-key bug with the Mac version of the game that makes the resolution ten times its normal settings, making the game freeze at the title screen and becoming unplayable. I had tested the game copy on my brother's Windows computer to make sure the file wasn't corrupted, and it ended up playing flawlessly. From the first couple levels that I had played through on that computer, I can safely say that the game itself is a great deal of fun, but I'll personally wait to purchase it again and finish it until the developers have patched the issue with the Mac Version.
I had addressed this issue with New Blood directly, and they told me they knew about the problem and would let me know when it was addressed. Once this has been corrected, I'll likely update my review to give this a full five-star rating. As it stands, though, I would advise Mac gamers to keep this on the wishlist for now, as well as any other players who care about their games being playable on any computer model. In the mean time, I'll be eagerly awaiting a response from New Blood once they've addressed the issue themselves.
I liked Dusk, it's a good game but I'd still rather play Quake 2 or Strafe. It's loaded with atmosphere, the lighting and locations are great. The weapons are underwhelming though. Their sound lacks any punch; explosions sound more like puffs than BOOMs The guns lack substance and weight to their sound and effect, very anemic. The enemy design is a little off as well. Soldiers wearing combat armor go down with a single shotgun blast while unprotected scientists take 2 or 3 of the same shotgun blast to kill.
Movement is fast and smooth but I tended to get hung up on the environment in a alot of places. There's a slide mechanism that I can see the use of but it took me by surprise. There are jump pads too that really fling you high into the air, making for levels with a lot of good verticality. Exploring the levels is actually quite fun, but some of the secrets are really secret. They can be tough to find, so that's fun.
I CAN see this game being a lot of fun in multiplayer modes.
My overall impression is that Dusk is like Rise of the Triad from 1995. That game was technically (literally) better than Doom in almost every way but there are just a few issues I had with it that keep me from enjoying it more than I expected.
Dusk is a favorite among the “boomer shooter” crowd, and there's a good reason for that. It’s a clear and overt tribute to the FPS games of old, and it nails their overall feel and appearance with its fast movement, reloading-free gunplay, and chunky polygonal graphics. While it is strongly inspired by the likes of Quake, Blood or Redneck Rampage and even references them on occasion, it’s more than a pastiche or a tribute and has its own unique feel and atmosphere. The levels have a unique aesthetic, the soundtrack is great, the worldbuilding is pretty cool, and while the 3D graphics mimic those of a 90’s game, they still have their share of cool-looking environments and insane architectures. It also gets genuinely creepy at times!
Gameplay-wise, it’s a whole lot of fun to play. It has its classic FPS arsenal and excessive speed movement: it’s extremely fun to circle-strafe and mow down the hordes of enemies thrown at you, but that’s not all. Dusk is not afraid to fully embrace its janky side and experiment with weirder mechanics, and it really shines when it lets out its more silly and modern vibe: for instance, you can use almost every object you can find as an improvised weapon, cook meat to regain health, or spin your guns for a small damage bonus. The level design has a ton of secrets to hunt down, and often lets you try out alternate paths and multiple ways to solve the issues you’re facing!
Dusk, however, has some shortcomings. Three of four enemy types are annoying, notably rats and gun turrets; a few levels clearly had less efforts invested into them; and while the movement and gunplay are a ton of fun, I occasionally found them to be a bit wobbly, especially when locked in more confined spaces with multiple enemies.
Still, Dusk deserves praise for being one of the first games to faithfully emulate the style of retro shooters, and… well, for being a banger. It’s not for everyone, but you will like it you’re a fan of retro gaming and over-the-top action.
