Description
Whether the dreams brought on the fever or the fever brought on the dreams Walter Gilman
did not know.
- H.P. Lovecraft, The Dreams in the Witch House

Arkham, Massachusetts 1929. Walter Gilman, a promising math student, has just moved to the city and is starting his studies at Miskatonic University. The Dombrowski’s boarding house where he resides has a bad reputation, but Walter doesn’t mind the old rumors... Until the dreams start. A hideous scheme is underway, and if Walter is not careful, it could cost him more than his life. It could cost him his soul.

Dreams in the Witch House is a unique mix of classic point and click adventure and open world RPG. The gameplay is nonlinear and many of the elements are generated randomly, making each playthrough different.

You have two months to prepare Walter for the dreaded May-Eve. How you spend the time is completely up to you: concentrate on studies, get friends and stay in good physical and mental state. Or explore the old rumours, read the forbidden books at Miskatonic University, and work on your occult thesis. Or just stay in bed, and hope that it all goes away!

Based on the short story "The Dreams in the Witch House" by H.P. Lovecraft.

  • Open world sandbox meets point and click adventure game
  • RPG elements: money, health, sanity, and many character stats
  • Day / evening / night - cycles and changing weather
  • Several endings depending on player’s actions
  • 10 - 20 hours of playtime
  • Original soundtrack by genre favourite Troy Sterling Nies (The Call of Cthulhu, The Whisperer in the Darkness)
  • Creeping tension: otherwordly threats intensify gradually
  • 320 x 180 pixel graphics
  • Plenty of detailed animation and visual effects

Very Good and Extremly Nerdy

I have not finished this game yet but after playing for a few hours I like it very much. It is an unusual combination of point-and-click adventure and micro-management game. As earlier reviews have pointed out, at first the management of resources (sleep, food, health, warmth, sanity, several categories of knowledge, and time) is quite difficult. This is because not all ways to keep your character at the necessary levels is apparent immediately. My suggestion is to experiment a bit and then start a new game for a more enjoyable experience. Of course, some difficulty will remain - no fun without a little challenge. The struggle of a poor student in pre-computer times is simulated yery accurately: Should you study to do well on exams, do odd jobs because you are seriously short on money - or just get a good night of sleep? And, of course, it would not be a Lovecraftian game without the omnipresent, ever encroaching manifestations of Cosmic Horror putting a strain on the protagonist's sanity. If you like the literary tradition in the wake of Edgar Allan Poe and Howard P. Lovecraft and if you have spent time studying at a university, this game is definitely for you. I myself do a lot of creative work and studying of math and computer science in my free time. It is somewhat weird that after another evening-session of studying, writing, and coding, at my desk I turn to this game for relaxation - only to play a character who sits at a desk studying math and occult tomes. It hardly gets more nerdy than this.

Lovecraft Point and Click

If you hold any fondness for Point-and-Click games and enjoy Cosmic Horror, this game is fantastic. It's based on the Lovecraft story of the same name, and pulls off the experience beautifully. The graphics are extremely pixellated - part of the charm, but not everybody's cup of tea. If you can get past that, it's fantastic. While it's difficult for POC games to randomize things from one playthrough to the next, the game does add enough that you can't go by memory from a prior playthrough for all of the puzzles, though the fundamental nature of the puzzles is still somewhat static. Time, money, sanity, and health are your main resources, and it can take a bit before you get the hang of managing them. If I have a complaint, it's that the in-game suggestions for how to balance them were vague to nonexistent. The balancing act is really not that bad once you figure things out, but things can be pretty rough on a blind runthrough.

Solid Game, More than a Point and Click

This is a fantastic game for those who are into or curious about Lovecraftian Mythos. If that is not your cup of tea then it is also always nice to play a game where it is obvious how much developers cared and were invested in making the experience whole. The gameplay feels unique and fresh and is always engaging with a sense of urgency. Even if that urgency is studying for a test or scrounging for money to buy a meal. I admittedly skip through most text files and conversations in games but in this game I found myself searching through the library and the archives for fun. The library card catalog is in itself a testament to the developer's knowledge of weird fiction and Lovecraftian tomes. The horror is introduced quickly but escalates slowly creating a crawling sense of chaos. The protagonist perfectly aligns with the story and mood of the game. Azathoth approves.

Its a fun game. Play it.

One of the best adventure games I've played in a while. Dreams in the Witch House balances a lot of features without descending into boring chaos. Time management is engaging without becoming cumbersome, the 'open world' gameplay allows some freedom without any confusion about what to do next, and the game maintains a nice eerie atmosphere throughout (along with a few minor jump scares). Play it, its a good time. Solve puzzles, save lives (if you feel like it), and occasionally get mauled by eldritch beings.

A relaxing tribute to Lovecraft

I cannot praise this game enough. It captures the nostalgia of old adventure games with its old school pixelated graphics. The real time school and time balance management is like playing the Sims and just as addictive. There is a detective component with being able to search the library or archives for newspaper clips, occult books, and other items of interest. The story is fantastic and the multiple outcomes encourages you to play it over and over again. Most of all, it is fairly true to the original story. The best game I have played from GOG.com in a long time!
