Whether the dreams brought on the fever or the fever brought on the dreams Walter Gilman
did not know. - H.P. Lovecraft, The Dreams in the Witch House
Arkham, Massachusetts 1929. Walter Gilman, a promising math student, has just moved to the city and is starting his studies at Miskatonic University. The Dombrowski’s boarding house where he resides has a bad reputation, but Walter doesn’t mind the old rumors... Until the dreams start. A hideous scheme is underway, and if Walter is not careful, it could cost him more than his life. It could cost him his soul.
Dreams in the Witch House is a unique mix of classic point and click adventure and open world RPG. The gameplay is nonlinear and many of the elements are generated randomly, making each playthrough different.
You have two months to prepare Walter for the dreaded May-Eve. How you spend the time is completely up to you: concentrate on studies, get friends and stay in good physical and mental state. Or explore the old rumours, read the forbidden books at Miskatonic University, and work on your occult thesis. Or just stay in bed, and hope that it all goes away!
Based on the short story "The Dreams in the Witch House" by H.P. Lovecraft.
Open world sandbox meets point and click adventure game
RPG elements: money, health, sanity, and many character stats
Day / evening / night - cycles and changing weather
Several endings depending on player’s actions
10 - 20 hours of playtime
Original soundtrack by genre favourite Troy Sterling Nies (The Call of Cthulhu, The Whisperer in the Darkness)
I played it on a different platform in case that is relevant.
I loved this game. Easily my favorite game of this decade, and maybe even the last one. It has beaten Dark Corners of the Earth as my favorite Lovecraft game too. I can't recommend it enough.
Bad memories aside, this game is excellent in every respect. I was even surprised by the quality of the animation, which is usually limited in many pixel art games. Even if you're not craving for another Lovecraft themed game, this will surprise you for it's high quality and originality of execution.
This is a very faithful adaptation of the Lovecraft short story by the same name. The build up is reasonably slow, and that's just the way it should be. I found myself loving the daily struggle of being broke, having to study and get good grades, working on Gilman's thesis, studying the occult... a really good student simulator in its own right. But it is still story driven, and there are multiple endings available - including two good endings (well, a good and an evil one), which is not how the original story ends. Easily one of my favourite Lovecraftians.
This game is really something special. I'm not really into Lovecraft and never read any of his works, but I've tried a fair share of game and movie adaptations, like In the Mouth of Madness or the recent Sherlock Holmes game by Frogware.
While The Sinking City, for example, did not manage to spark my interest in the original works, Dreams of the Witch House with its distinct historical background made me curious. Also as a detective game it's just vastly superior, you really have to be attentive and dig through the available ingame books and files to figure stuff out. The game doesn't have that many classical Point and Click Adventures puzzles. It's more like one big puzzle in itself with a variety of ways to approach it and many different outcomes.
This non-linearity is one of the games greatest assets, but it also comes with a price. I'm not really a fan of surivial mechanics in general, let alone in a classic adventure game. Some of your regular tasks can become tedious over time and sometimes I had the feeling to not making any progress at all. Fixing your light bulb again and again, getting to town to buy the same items week for week, borrowing and returning books... there a quite a few chores you have to get through time and time again.
I started over in easy mode after a while, which will give you more breathing room to try out things and make mistakes. It was still a great ride, just don't expect anyone to tell you what to do. After being a little put off by the rpg mechanics at some point, I just rolled with it and it was absolutly worth it.
MILD SPOILERS:
My Walter started as a straight A student, who fell further and further into the maelstrom of the occult and almost went mad in the process, until things took a turn in the end and he finally gets the upper hand. Even if it took its toll. There are a lot of variations on how the story can turn out, it was nice to get one of the better ends at first try. Not sure if I could stomach another go, though.
I'm clearly in the minority here, but I really did not enjoy my time with this game. I was constantly cold, constantly wet, constantly tired, and constantly hungry. I got to the point where I needed a plank, firewood wouldn't work, no one sold wood, so I guess I was just going to get eaten to death.
Maybe don't listen to me, everyone else likes it.
