Description
An authoritarian state pacifying the masses with propaganda.

A brutal police force that shoots first then shoots some more.

An ordinary everyman named Eugene, dragged by coincidence and circumstance from a life of mundane menial tasks into a baffling world of sudden, inexplicable murder, hidden conspiracy and unrelentingly lethal robots with nasty sharp pincers and lasers coming out of everywhere.

Depicted in a distinctive Cyrillic pixel art style the cyberpunk city crackles with tech-noir intrigue and neo-digital deceptions. Using every tool at your disposal help Eugene to unpick the knot of mystery that he has become enmeshed within – your equilibrium will be rocked as you point and click a path through this briar patch of tangled meaning and unexpected quixotic quirks.

Will Eugene make sense of the conundrum that unfolds before him, learn who is an ally or a foe and collect lots of vinyl records for his listening pleasure? He'll race rapid hover bikes to earn sub-cultural respect, rub shoulders with high society in a post-modern nightclub, hack the brains of pursuing drone cops in thrill-packed chase sequences, strive to survive tense shootouts with merciless law enforcers and enjoy some 8-bit cowboy coin-op action in a dingy dive bar with a broken toilet.
  • Multiple Endings
  • Unique blend of action and point and click
  • Wacky Russians!

What a disappointment!

At a glance, the screenshots looked very appealing, very similar to Flashback and Another World. Honestly, nostalgic graphics resembling Flashback are the only thing that is good about this game. Animation is mediocre at best. Controls are terrible. In an attempt to make this game playable on touch devices every step you take is grid-aligned and discreet. Forget Prince of Persia style running jumps, forget falling to your death, forget combat tactics. Keyboard control is a joke - sluggish and unresponsive. A few words on gameplay. Policemen and police robots are just standing there waiting for you to come closer and engage them in combat, oblivious to anything outside of their vision range which is about 10 meters. They also fight to the death, never considering to retreat or to call reinforcements. They are also deaf - they don't hear you when you fall down from the floor above, as long as you fall behind their backs. I'd say the plot sucks, but I'll be more accurate: the game really has no plot. Gameplay is extremely linear. The protagonist acts in ways that don't make any sense. "Sure, Mr. Rebel, I'll go and kill the president just because you're telling me to. I'm feeling extremely confident, I need no special gear or training, just show me the top secret underground compound that I need to infiltrate." It's a shame, really. Over 20 years after Flashback, Blackthorne and Prince of Persia, and this game is not nearly as good. A total waste of money and two hours of time.

Short and disappointing

I finished this game in exactly 2h8min (with a short break). It's too short and not fun. I didn't quit before the end but I don't think I would have opened the game again if the first session hadn't been enough. ---Just buy Gemini Rue instead (It's also in sale at the moment I write this review and it's way better)--- CONS: - Terrible controls (I only tried point&click controls but the game also has keyboard and gamepad support, keyboard didn't convince me so I stick to mouse). Several commands linked to left click leading to mistakes that will often lead you right under a security camera. Inflexible system, you must be right under a platform to start climbing, you can't plan your move from a distance. Great when you need to go fast. - Easy puzzles (either two doors, the second giving you an item that allow you to continue behind the first one, or buttons unlocking door/platforms or distracting guards with a flying TV) - Unrealistic, the guards are distracted by a flying TV screen and you can then go right behind them without sneaking (it's not an option in game). It felt like a big puzzle game where the enemies are only a pretext for the simple puzzle mechanic. - Gun fights are not bad but not interesting. When you go right in front of a guard the camera zooms in and you can either fire or use an energy shield. - Some graphical glitches (superposing speech text, flying TV screen disappearing behind background elements.) - Short and shallow story : why is an unwilling janitor chosen to save the world ? It feels unfinished you don't learn anything about your character or the world. I have never felt involved or concerned by the story. - The "multiple endings" is almost a trickery : you don't have any choices during the game. You only have two choices at the last scene. So there is two endings and given that you have no clue about what exactly is happening and what you are doing, you don't know what to choose. I have choosen what felt good but it was almost random. PROS: - The graphic style is not too bad but the environment aren't that interesting to watch. - Technically it's playable. Even though it's not that enjoyable and no t worth its price.

A servicable game with clunky controls

2.5 Stars. The gameplay is pretty simple and straight forward; it's a puzzle platformer. There are sequences that are reminiscent of other games, but it is primarily a puzzle platformer. The puzzles aren't even that difficult and solutions are often pretty straightforward. This game has very clunky controls; I found that a gamepad worked best for me, especially in sequences that required you to move or act very quickly. The mouse was my least preferred method and the keyboard controls were okay at best; they sort of feel like the old Prince of Persia game from 1980s. The story is alright, but nothing special. The clunky controls are often what caused me to die, but death is not very punishing. The game restarts you on the same screen and you don't lost too much progress. It's an okay game that's not very challenging; if you like playing easy games just for their stories then you will probably like it. Pixel graphics are okay (it's not as gorgeous as Hyper Light Drifter per se) and music is decent. Overall, a passable and somewhat mediocre game.

Fun short game with great atmosphere

First, here is an advice if you buy this game: Play it with the keyboard controls rather than the mouse. It is described as a point and click but it really is more of a puzzle platformer like Prince of Persia or Flashback. Controls aren't as good as those games but they do the job. Level design is pretty straightforward and that is a shame because the environments are really gorgeous and the setting is pretty cool. The story isn't great but the little touches here and there add to the background as well as the music. The change of pace minigames are pretty cool and do bring a sense of urgency to the game and add much needed action. Overall, it's a fun title with great post apocalyptic scifi environments and graphics very reminiscent of Flashback, Blade Runner and the likes. However, the good ideas it had are undermined by lackluster controls and a slow pace to the game. If it controlled as well as Flashback, it would have been a 4* As it is and for the low price you can get it at (i got it around 3$), it's worth playing through. It's a bit short but the music and environments make up for it.

Short and linear with clunky controls

Dreambreak seems to be intended as an interactive movie, rather than a game. Especially since a lot of effort went into its visuals - visuals I've grown so accustomed to, I was only wowed by the color palette, which makes everything look amazing. It also has some amazing music - music so good, I'm going to upgrade to the deluxe edition just to get it. But Dreambreak is too short a game to instill any impression, beyond its extremely clunky controls. All you're tasked with doing is going from left to right, solving a series of extremely simple puzzles, as well as several mini-games completely aped from famous games from the 80s and 90s. Very little effort went into making those famous mini-games unique, so they end up being sub-par to the game they were taken from. Puzzles also get repeated far too often, meaning you'll encounter the same puzzles several screens in a row. You also can't interact with the environment, until it's time to collect something you need to solve a puzzle, that is placed right next to where the puzzle is. So there's no reason to explore the small and limited world of Dreambreak. There are collectibles, for some reason, but they require no skills to collect, since more often than not you'll stumble across them. There are also a bunch of documents thrown around the levels, again for some unknown reason, but like the collectibles, they are also extremely superfluous. Even if you tried to collect every collectible and see everything there is to see, which isn't much, this game would last an hour at most, if the controls weren't so clunky. More often than not you'll die because the character walked when you told it to run, ran when you told it to walk, or moved left into a mine when you told it to jump to a ledge. Controls are so clunky you have to babysit your character throughout the entire level, only moving him several paces at a time. But what really irks me is the lack of plot - the world and character are uninteresting and paper thin.
