Fabulous adventure RPG

Back are the days of great games like Baldurs Gate and Planescape Torment. True this game doesn't compare to them just like PST doesn't compare to BG. This game stands on its own feet and sets a new standard other adventure RPG's will be measured against. Note that you can play the game in different ways. I chose to play it as 'Classical' so this review is for that style. The game has gorgeous graphics just slightly going to the side of cartoonish (i.e. specularity isn't used too much and colors are bright). This allows for some (Larian) humor in the game which otherwise would feel out of place (like for instance the sheep animation :-) ). Important in games are the number of things you can do so the world feels real and in DOS there is plenty to do. * Detective work * Crafting ** You try to combine items you think make sense ** Apply recipes you find during your travels * Fighting * Level up with a lot of choice how you would like to do that * Lots of things to discover so keep your eyes peeled This game did the impossible for an adventure with lots of text (think NWN, PST, BG amounts of text) and that is to have everything and I mean everything voice acted. There are lots and lots of items in game everything with its own great looking icon. The TBS fights are not too tough and not too easy. Equipment needs to be maintained but in a way that makes it easy. You can just right click repair and the character that is best at repairing will do it for you. This saves you from the tedious dragging around equipment. Interesting characters to meet, fabulous treasures to be found and insidious foes to be fought. This is one of the best adventure RPG's I played in a long time. 6 out of 5 stars from me.

SWEET RELIEVE!

70 hrs to beat it - the game is really intense! This is an excellent game. With its story, fights, graphics, gameplay mechanics, other stuff I would recommend it as must play. BUT! There are few flaws which add spoon of shit to the honey barrel: 1. Battles are interesting overall but massive fights are infuriating in the late game. You can not skip or speed up enemy movement so 80% of time you just watching how they are buffing each other before their imminent death on my move; 2. Puzzles are ok but in the end of the game, you will encounter the most stupid and annoying ones. Ending part is a bit disappointing; 3. The final boss looks like an escort mission. It has driven me crazy! 4. The game world very ambiguous. You can speak with chickens, search for the zombie-sheep, have some cheesy conversations while everything is covered in blood, piles of corpses, puddles of blood, impaled corpses, bloody sacrifices and rotten piles of bloody corpses. Still glad I have played this gem.

absolutely awesome game.

This is a extremely polished title. Everything from graphics to audio, from animations to the lore oozes talent. An absolutely must buy for rpg and turn based lovers.

one of a kind

Highly suggest playing lone wolf style in honor mode if you haven't already. Best option for pure classes though, my favorite is Backstabber/Crossbow Archer here. Female warrior VA is top notch. DOS 2 is a good game, DOS is a masterpiece

Surprisingly bad

It seems the developers took a close look on every established game mechanic in isometric RPGs and came up with a way to make it worse. Every simple tasks needs way more clicks than necessary. For example to sell an item to a vendor you have to move it in a trade window, have to ask for gold in return (because you could gift it to him to make them like you more) and than finally agree to the deal. While they thankfully let you sell more than one item at once this way, you have to do for each character individually because you can't switch to their inventory while you have a pending offer. In theory there is a button to display loot in an area around you that corresponds to your selected characters perception stat (hiding accessibility features behind character stats is a bad idea to begin with), in practice this button is not working at all (bug encountered in the Linux version), making it extremely tedious to search for loot after a battle. Speaking of battles: they are actually good and pleasantly tactical unless you cursor starts to hop rapidly back and forth between your target and an empty spot next to it, resulting in constant miss clicks. Also your party dies from hidden traps or other "fun" mechanics more often than the game auto-saves and resurrection is only possible via scrolls which are expensive and of limited supply, so you better make a habit of manually saving as often as you can. All this could be tolerated if the story was engaging but ten hours in nothing interesting has happened other than a weird gnome explaining me that I am the chosen one for reasons yet unknown. I'm rarely ever was less invested in the world or any of the characters than I was in this game.
