Love DOS2. Bought the game on GOG, and now I have to launch GOG galaxy and then the Larian launcher and then finally the game EACH TIME. Before, I was able to simply launch the game exe, but doing so without all the launchers crashes the game during startup now. I also feel like I get a lot more crashes in general now. Will reconsider buying from GOG after this experience
I can see people giving 5 stars and I can see the game selected as GOTY on many sites. I have no problem beleiving, that this game is better than other games this year from all genres. But for me, it doesn't mean, that this game is absolutely awesome above very great games. No, it means, that the competition from all genres were mediocre at best, and this game is above medicore. So why am I not giving 5 stars but only 3? Well, I'd love to give 3 1/5, but that's not an option on this site. It's almost hitting 4 stars, but definetely not 5.
Let's see the positives:
1. Great atmosphere. There is a lot, i mean A LOT to do and whether or not the player is gonna do everything or not, it depends how long can someone fiddle around on an area. Despite some people claiming, that it can be difficult, there are some redudant side missions here, that actually won't really raise nor give any significant loot, especially if you happen to stumble upon a mission, that has 1 or 2 level lower opponents.
2. Great graphics and sound. While the birds eye view camera may not be everyone's cup of tea, the environment is drawn beautifully and the music is top notch, along with special effects and sound effects.
3. Great depth of gameplay. As I mentioned already, there is plenty to do, and nearly infinite combinations of gear and mixture of skills to be learned, as well as party selection and party training. The game can be also very long, depending how far the gamer will go to try and check everything.
Ok, so here comes the reasons for 3.5 score:
1. Inventory/loot/equipment management.
I can't think of a game, that I spent at least 50-60% of my time fiddling with my gear and equipment. It's now. literally 5 minutes travel -> find a book or a gear -> 15 min. switching gear, switching spells, identifying, selling, buying, dropping, adding, mixing, combining, cooking, expermineting, repairing compairing. It totally pulls the hault on the gameplay. And I ran out of characters to write m
It's hard to put this game into words on the screen for people to read so they have an understanding of how much fun this game is.
I've put 300+ hours into this game. I've played through it multiple times and each time I play through or start over, I find something new I had not experienced before.
I've restarted the game many times. I've played with my own character creations and I've almost played through all the stories for the origin characters, the last for me is Loshe and so far her story hasn't disappointed.
My brother and I are on our third playthrough and we're about half-way through the second act. We've done different approaches in all play throughs. The first time we had restarted the game 4 or 5 times until we found an effective way for training our characters. Our second time playing through we played as unforgiving, evil people and we slaughtered everyone and everything in our way. The current play through we are only playing one character each and we're using the Lone Wolf trait for them, it's been a tough challenge, but it's been great fun, too.
There are bugs in the game still, nothing game breaking, but ones you may stumble across.
I'd have to say that the most disappointing aspect of the game is the inventory management. It sucks, plain and simple. There are the Gift Bags in the main game menu you can apply to your game (these gift bags disable achievements, just so you know) to give you bonuses and add special features to "spice" up the gameplay. The one I thought would be good would be the inventory bag one....I hate this one, it makes keeping track of my inventory even harder. You also cannot easily sell items you mark for ware, you have to manually find every item you want to sell inside a dozen or so bags. Avoid that gift bag option.
The other gift bag option to avoid (if you're playing coop) is Hagglers. This gift bag is buggy with coop. Single players, use it. It'll help with buying and selling.
The reasosn for the 3 Stars is that the following issues bothered me from start to finish Beside this a good game. I also add that I did not play this game with Mods and I played on "Classic Mode".
#1 Money issue:
In the 1st 2 chapters I did find merchants and different NPC that sold me Armour and Weapons with stats that fit very well to my characters classes, but I had not much money. Later in the game I had tons of money but the NPC's just sold me stuff I had no use for as it did not fit to my characters classes. I Had an Asssassin, a "Dreadknight" a Ranger and a Huntsman with Pyro and Poison skills. So 2 "close Combat classes" and 2 "ranged Combat classes".
But back to the money issue...
You could think Thievery is a good way to make money on the beginning, which some guides als suggest, but A. You have to start VERY eraly with it basically when you character had not really leveled up much. So it's risky B. Maybe you don't want your Characters to be Thieves C. Every character can just steal 1 time per NPC and it's hard to steal ALL the NPC's money!
#2 Armour and Weapons:
As I mentioned in #1 At the beginning you find NPC that sell you good stuff and later only stuff that was useless to me.
To be precise, the stuff I could get would have forced me to to make ALL my character classes Huntsmen with Pyro and Geomancer skills. As you can guess, not what I wanted!
The "funny" part is that the best Armour in my game was "The Armour of the Eternals" which is pretty good, but requires 14 Strenght to wear it. So nothing ment for classes that should use Finesss.
Crafting Armour and Weapon COULD be a solution. But it seems you can only craft stuff that has no additional Stats (except for Armor of the Eternals) And I don't know if crafting Weapons and Armour with stats is even possible without mods. I could not find a guide that bothered a lot with crafting Weapons and Armour, at least none that helped me.
One last note: Use GOG Galaxy to update this game! Really helps!
