Larian studios once again shows the world that there is developers who develop their games with such a degree of passion that the player can not help but to feel the love. The multiplayer, the combat, the writing, the art is all fantastic! Its hard to specify the feeling, but as a player you just know these guys put their heart into this project and had many laughs in the making of it. The very same feeling i got from the witcher series!
To list a few of this game pros:
- Great combat, non-repetitive even if you repeat the encounter you've just lost
- Lively and believable companions
- Been a while since I experienced the joy of getting a new gear from the very beginning to the very end
- Well-written script and, thank god, its less "Pratchetty" than the first game
- Last but not least, there are 6 companions in total so you can replay the whole game with a different story.,,
- ..if you can spare another 100 hours
Question turn based gaming? Don't. I questioned it hard only to be reminded of how much fun classic gaming styles can be when done right. There are hundreds of hours of fun in this game. I had a blast playing the game for the first 200 hours repeateadly to the halfway point just trying every single class combination and build theories I had. Chess on steroids with an incredible amount of depth and the story telling is pretty damn good to boot. I have run tired of games that seem to spend all their friggin time making pretty graphics with 30 hours of fun for 50$ or the complete ridiculousness of the 'Free2Play' milk you for every dime you have games. What a breath of fresh air and a great reminder of why some game styles never quit being fun as long as they are well made and Larian did an awesome job with this one. I will have no probably throwing whatever kickstarter money they need their way after this game. I am so glad I found GOG and all the awesome games I had never heard of. This game truly deserves all the positive reviews it has received.
It is a game of many parts/sub-genres. Whereas I definitely understand the glowing reviews, there are parts of the game that I did not like that much. The positives were all told by others, let me tell you what I did not like that much. Caution: This review will sound much more negative than my actual opinion of the game.
The non-combat exploration part of the game plays like a platformer, a la Lemmings or Mario or whatever. You have to make excessive use of all kinds of teleportation and telekinesis skills to solve puzzles, to reach objects or locations and so on. I am not a fan of this style, so for the most part this felt like a chore for me.
Huge maps save you on loading time you have to endure in other games when travelling, on the other hand they damage the feeling of immersion; e.g. a short walking distance from a quiet peaceful town you have monster/demon/undead infested locations. In short, the world doesn't feel real to me.
On a similar note, I am not a fan of the tropic environments full of color and sunshine that dominate the locations in the game. One does not get the feeling of grim urgency or desperation the story dictates when you are on a paradise island. This is a personal preference obviously...
The ending felt rushed. I felt like whatever final choice I make, I and my party end up at the same position.
Otherwise, terrific game. For me, not the perfect RPG however.
