Description
You are the Dragon Commander. Your mission is to reunite a broken empire and become the new emperor. Success depends entirely on your ability to efficiently rule your empire, build invincible armies and lead them to victory. Your secret weapons: your tactical insights, your leadership skills and your ability to turn yourself into a dragon.

More than 'just another' strategy game, Dragon Commander seamlessly blends turn-based and real-time strategy, action gameplay and roleplaying into a grand adventure. Plot the political course of your empire, move your armies into key locations in the world, command troops on the battlefield, and decimate the opposition as a ferocious dragon.

“Personally, we’re glad that Larian took the time to make sure they got it right. With its Total War-esque grand strategy interface, to its tactical mode that proves to be extremely engaging, this is going to be a really interesting spin-off title to a much-loved franchise.” - Strategy Informer

“Divinity: Dragon Commander contains two distinct components and in just over an hour of playing, I found much to like in both.” - Rock, Paper, Shotgun

"I greatly enjoyed my time with Divinity: Dragon Commander, and it promises to be an amazing and fresh take on the genre. It will also feature some very innovative cooperative play elements that can lead to some very epic battles." - Co-Optimus

“I was amazed about how much fun it was to play and experience Divinity: Dragon Commander” - RPGWatch
  • Real-time Strategy: Command your sea, land, and air forces in real-time. Combined operations and determining the perfect locations and times to strike are crucial to every victory.
  • Dragon Combat: During real-time strategy mode, transform into a dragon to support your troops in combat and obliterate the enemy using powerful dragon abilities.
  • Turn-based Campaign: Direct your conquest on the turn-based world map; plan several moves ahead, build formidable armies and invest in the right upgrades for technology and magic.

Solid 3/5

After 5-6 hours it gets too repetitive, once you get on the big map it is constant skipping of battles that you don't participate in. (10-20sec waste/round) save-scumming is a must, especially on hard difficulty, saving before making a decision is also a must. When attacking an area it does not happen immediately so the enemy can respond by sending additional units, you can't, so you always have to overkill with a 3x bigger army to actually have a chance. The game pushes real-life issues on the player even though it plays in a fantasy world; - for example, banning or allowing religious teachings in schools. The only issue is that the 7 gods actually exist there... - having to deal with constant sexist, homophobic, feminist companions by calming them down (Every second turn (2-5min) at least one of them has an existential crisis) The game also portrays different races as different types of ideologies. - the dwarves' only value is gold, they would not mind destroying the environment if they could save gold, they are also sexist and homophobic. - the undead (they are not even a god-made race according to the lore) is a very conservative, religious, and homophobic race - the elves are the green + stop oil community, while they are progressive in terms of rights, they loathe anything that is not natural like a god damned trading route. - lizards are the diplomats who want steady progress and equality for all - imps are imps, the only race who actually feels like part of the world. Whilst playing this game I don't feel like I'm in Rivellion, I feel like I'm in a room with the most argumentative politically active groups. It is a waste of time, but for those who are bored, this might be a good choice. I see some reviewers who like the real-life political choices, but as a fan of the actual divinity lore and a student of political philosophy, I find that part amusing.

Good game, but not on GOG

The GOG version lacks the key feature of the SteamWorks match making server, which means multiplayer is only through direct IP connection.

Decent

This game contains many elements of other games. If you've played Starcraft 2 you pretty much know what to expect when you're running aboard your capital ship with banter, research, etc. You capture pieces of land to enter battles in which you can also build reinforcements. If you win you gain a steady income from each of them. I was quite disappointed because it feels more like steampunk than fantasy what with all the technology you'll be using and the music sometimes feels like it too, even though it's well done. The political decisions will tear you right out of the immersion since they are pretty much on par with what politicians face today, nothing even remotely fantasy (healthcare, anyone?), they don't allow for reaching compromises and in the end don't even matter. Most of the characters are rather annoying - except for white Gandalf, he's cool - making you hate them instead of enjoying their company.

The game is broken

I have tried this game on two of my machines, one a high spec pc and another low spec laptop both crash with the assertion failure when the rts battle starts. if I avoid the rts battles all together the game often freezes whenever there is a new political proposal. So this game is simply not playable until there is a proper patch.

Want it to work

I was really excited for how cool this game looked. Anytime I try to start a campaign or skirmish the game crashes.
