The game chronicles the never-ending battle between valiant heroes and the destructive powers of Chaos harnessed by the Black Ring, a cult of enduring evil. Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
Basically unplayable due to bugs that won't allow you to save at one point. And that's just the icing on the cake as far as bugs go.
I understand that's because of modern OS, however...
Two stars as it comes at a meagre price and it has the classic RPG feel.
The only good thing about this game is that it allowed an existence of BG3. The beginning of the game is kind of ok, despite that combat being too fast and too clunky. I was eager to overlook that and check out the story, but noooooo, you have to do the same stuff over and over again until it just made me uninstall this game after 21 hour of playing. I simply couldn't take it anymore, nail in the coffin was the fact that i had to re-run an already explored dungeon under the merchant town to try to find something the game only mentioned as a way to go lol. BUT there was another alternative which was also find the thieves guild which i vaguely remembered to be mentioned by some forgettable npc god knows where on a huge map. Nah no, too big, too long, too repetitive.
Don't even bother checking out where it all started :)
I've enjoyed many games of similar vintage but these first two Divinity games are really nothing special. The game's setting, Rivellon, is entirely derivative of fantasy worlds you've seen many times before. It seems to be aware of this and makes attempts to play it for humor but without much success. I found myself laughing at it more than I laughed with it. The control scheme is dreadful, as well. To compensate they added a modifier key that auto-targets the nearest enemy. Combat is simply click-till-they-die but calling it Diablo-like would be absurd. None of the quest I experienced (I admit I couldn't bear to play DD to completion) were anything out of the ordinary for games in this genre. You can certainly choose which ones you want to do but the choices you make in performing them and their outcomes are not though provoking. This is a game that sits comfortably within conventions. How it has been elevated beyond that seems a matter of nostalgia for a time when gamer's options were more limited.
