Bought this RPG a few weeks ago via GOG - love it
Way better than Diablo or any other RPG that I have played.
Some annoyances with accessing certain areas but these did not (so far) prevent me from playing the game.
I greatly enjoyed this game, while the story isn't as engaging as baldur's gate nor is the combat as addicting as Diablo 2, the game is a great blend of two. The story is interesting enough to keep you interested, with a large quantity of side quests and NPCs which add flavour to the game world (not just filling). The action could of been handled better, and reminds me alot of Lionheart (another game I recommend), however it is still fun and enjoyable. One of the best aspects of the game however is character customisation, unlike so many stat and skill based games, even low levels in skills are useful so that you can be either a jack of many trades or a master in a few. This is a pleasant change from most games where a few wrong points at the start of the game can lead to useless and stunted characters later in the game.
Tldr; A fun and addicting game with good character customisation and a decent story. Not a must-play game, but one I fully recommend.
As others have already mentioned, Divine Divinity is only comparable to Diablo based on the isometric view and the combat mechanics. The core of the game, though, is reminiscent of Elder Scrolls games : a huge open world, tons of (actually interesting and innovative) sidequests and a complex but simple to manage character development.
Graphically, it is perhaps not stellarly great (although the lizard jokey really looks cool :), but it's more than adequate, with only the occasional isometric view specific problems creeping up (objects or NPCs blocking the view on loot, difficulties visualizing different levels of terrain or high objects like columns and trees). The game is so engrossing that those details can easily be ignored.
Soundwise, on the other hand, it is just great The sound effects are all very well done, the (sparse) spoken dialogue is not perfect but fits well in, and the soundtrack is a gem (and it's even included in the bonis :). It's really one of the best C-RPG soundtracks I know of, breaking with a lot of preconceived ideas what a medieval-fantasy game soundtrack should sound like.
If you are into real time quest/story oriented RPGs, with quite a bit of hack'n slash and a lot of exploring, then you owe it to yourself to get it.
DIABLO 2 WISHES IT COULD BE THIS DOPE.
IVE PLAYED THEM ALL AND DD is THE CREME DE LA CREME OF SLASHY RPG EXPLORING TYPES RIGHT UNDER BG AND BG2 ~!!!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!!!!!!!!!
I'm an old school crpg fan, grew up on the likes of Ultima, Bard's Tale, M&M, etc, that's what I originally came to GOG for. Along the way I've started trying other games that came after my long ago playing days, and Divine Divinity was one of the first I tried. I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed it. It has all the great classic elements of the great crpg's like intriguing storyline, interesting characters and npc's, fun magic and combat. And the ability to customize your skill tree no matter which class you chose was great! Can't wait to play the rest of the series, and I can't recommend this game enough, hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did!
