cool game
Except, I have never once beaten it... I didn't know when I hit 50 years old that I would suddenly suck at video games. Oh well, not the game's fault.

Good
This game has some odd elements. It could be very very very micromanaging. But nearly everything can be put on automatic so it doesn't have to be. You can almost automate everything, let it run, and come back later to see if you won. The system does let you focus on what you like to do. The one exception is the advisor spamming you with "Do you want to build this mining station?" The answer is always yes but it can't be automated. It's very annoying. It's a long slow game with a huge tech tree. I enjoyed my 1 play even though I didn't achieve a specific vitory condition or make even half way through the tech tree. I was domination the galaxy and had had enough.

Great ideas+support <> premature release
DW2 was for me THE game I was eagerly waiting for from the time it was announced, because I had faith in the Devs and their idea for a very user-friendly and almost infinite customizable (and modifiable) huge and innovative 4X space-strategy game. - And I, at first, was not disappointed, and started to delve in its mere infinite possibilities - beginning from unmatched freedom in setting the games framework conditions, via very sophisticated mechanics regarding automation options, to all the possible ways of fiddling with easy to edit gamefiles that are written in xml- or even txt-format. - The game really offers all this possibilities. :) But not long after my euphoric start I realized that many other aspects have been put in second place: Beginning from its mostly horrible music, via a missing intro or anything that could enhance its atmosphere above handling a relaxing, but complicated science-formula, via simple text-tutorials and un-movable (or sizable) windows and messages, to some technical performance issues, bugs and gameplay-difficulties that required to try to learn things by trial and error principles, because those are not only missing in the tutorials, but also not explained in the otherwise ample manual or ingame-encyclopedia. And last but not least the modability is also severly limited, because important things (like editing art assets, races, ships, etc.) aren’t easy accessible, yet (at least not without the use of a very complex and comprehensive editor - Stride 3D). :/ Due to space restrictions to be continued… (here: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/continuation_of_review_on_shopsite_of_dw2)

Terrible Game
If like a space empire game where you have zero control over your own ships, this is the game for you. I bought this on Steam when it came out. I check on the game every so often to see if the many problems have been fixed. Sadly, it's not much better now. The game was released before it was finished. Almost every aspect of the game doesn't work. Case in point: Your fleets love to go on suicide missions they no hope of surviving. Tell a fleet to defend a planet. Yeah, that's never going to happen if there is an over powered enemy anywhere. That fleet will leave the planet it's supposed to be defending, and throw itself one ship at a time (attacking as fleet is only done by the AI), insuring it's totally destroyed. It's a fatal flaw the developers think of as a feature, since they have done nothing to fix it. Most of the game is like that. Half baked ideas, executed poorly. On the good side the game looks good.

Frustrating because it had potential
From game to game it definitely has optimization problems. Even with a smaller world setup it can still stutter and hang up, even at the start. Just bad code. Game is also lifeless as diplomacy and race personas is just bare bones. Did any of the current strategy programmers ever play games like Master of Orion 2 or Alpha Centauri. ? Also why try to create a realistic looking universe if you're going to put butt ugly lines running everywhere. It's mind boggling.
