My gaming discovery of 2019

Few games give me that particular feeling I get while reading a great book. And it's not about comparing books to games - these are 2 very different media, none of them better than the other - just very different. And yet, this game somehow manages to evoke those feelings in me while being a great game at the same time. It's fantastically written, the characters and world depicted are believable and fascinating. On top of that it's beautiful, employs a very neat, fresh gameplay system which is very simple and understandable at the same time. Everything is based on dialogue, including using your skills, which is a very refreshing approach. This makes the game resemble a pen-and-paper RPG. Great freedom of choice and developing your character contributes to that as well, and is very satisfying. You can be a good guy, boring guy, wacko or just plain dickhead. It's up to you and every way of playing uncovers new layers of the game. On top of that - the situation when my digestive system tried to convince me to fascism, while injecting random umlauts here and there - priceless. This game is a must-play.

So... what kind of cop are you?

Disco Elysium is a brilliant trip worthy of praise for its unconventional genre mixing of the neo-noir detective thriller and classic isometric RPGs. I had little clue what I was getting myself into when starting this game, and after 36 hours of a completed playthrough, I still am a little unsure what I really played. Sure, it's branded as a detective RPG, but that felt superfluous to its clever underpinnnings. From the sordid visuals of a city postwar to the ecstasy-infused neon interactions, Disco is weird and it won't let you forget it. In every sense, the game successfully defines its own style as it sucks you into its own swirl of abnormal untaming. It sees a new world unfold (highly derivitative of ours, of course) with whole cultures, races, political and economic systems reinvented. Under this guise, the game can say what it wants about whatever culture, whatever system, whatever ideology without fear of ruffling our feathers. It makes it all up for its own pleasure, allowing the player to separate reality from the fantasy just enough so that terms such as "moralist" or "ultraliberal" are less distracting. It then gives the player enough perspective and motivation to see what belief system makes the most sense to them as they make vital choices. You see, in this RPG, everything is measured. Your actions, your words and your time spent. When you are asked 'what kind of cop are you?' that is not rhetorical. It is prophecy. Disco Elysium has a lot to say. I'd be foolish not to recommend this experience. This world you've stumbled on is odd, corrupt and broken. What you do will either remedy the terror or further it. By golly, you'll feel good doing it too.

Painfully beautiful

This game, boy, this game has some qualities baby, you want to fucking feel shit when you play a game? you want to go on a emtional rollercoaster that isn't gonna withhold its punches then dive into disco elysium, the only game so far that has really elevated the medium to something more than it was before. I look forward to more projects from ZA/UM, rumor has it there might be an expansionpack or sequel on the way, I can't wait to see what other things these guys have brewing after they managed to place the bar so high.

Masterpiece

I bought this on a hunch like a true superstar detective would. This game is a masterpiece with an engaging story from start to finish. It felt like the perfect marriage of a role playing game and an point and click adventure with a heavy focus on the superbly written dialog and the vivid characters as well as the different skills which made me want to play this again soon.
