The best game since Planescape

I don't write reviews, like ever. But this one deserves it. You're going to see that name-dropped a lot when talking about this game. It's because there aren't a lot of games that stay true to RPGs and focus this heavily on story - let alone do it well. Disco Elysium manages to not only come up with a genius system that focuses completely on dialogue and narrative, but they also manage to create a completely unique world and a very interesting story. Disco Elysium manages to do almost everything right if you like reading. I have one qualm, and I feel like it's good to know this before getting into it. The ending is kind of abrupt, as has been mentioned. The story seems like it is leading somewhere, and then the credits roll. I can't imagine the writers are doing this by accident. I truly believe the story is leading somewhere after this. But be warned, although the last moments are very well done, it doesn't get tied up neatly like Planescape does. I think if a sequel or DLC comes out to expand the story further, my opinion on the ending will change. However, if this is completely self-contained, I have to admit I feel like I've got a bit of a case of blue balls with it. Either way, this game is incredible. Every moment for me was hilarious, exciting, or beautiful - often a mix of several. 100% worth a buy. Just be prepared that I feel like there's more ahead for Disco.

The Best of Gaming

Beautiful art, riveting story and writing that's sharp like you wouldn't believe. And, oh God, the reactivity. This, this is why I play games, and I consider myself lucky to have experienced this one.

Great game, story, world and characters

If you like Planescape Torment or Torment tides of numenera it is a must buy for you. If you like oldschool isometric RPGS you will probably like it. If you like reading books than you will also like this game its like reading a book a choose your own adventure story. First half of the game is great you are an amnesiac, alcoholic detective who trys to get his shit together after a week of heavy drinking. Second part after meeting a certain person gets quite linear and game suffers on it a bit but it's still good. I didn't encounter any bugs on my playthrough but i know some people had some. The game, the world are really immersive so get ready to be lost for about 40-60 hours. There are many skill checks in the game that rely on your skills or clothing but don't think you always have to succeed some times failure at some tasks is more benefical or is morally better. I think it's the game of the year material you should really try it!

Godlike RPG

I used to believe that only Chris Avellone could exploit the computer rpg medium to tell good stories. Now I think of that for Robert Kurvitz as well. 11/10

Another fine successor to Planescape

Yes, the setting is not the same, yes, we roam in a city and not on various planes of existence, but I came back 20 years ago while playing this game. It brought me to the humor, the cleverness of Planescape: Troment's dialogs. And then I played a couple of hours more, and developed my personality. The game reoriented me from the superstar cop to the boring-communist-hobo-paranormal explorer cop (which, come to think of it, is like I'd like to spend my real life, it's way cooler to propagate Marxist ideas and seize the means of production than develop software for capitalists). It is not a Baldur's Gate like (and not truly like Planescape). Fighting is not the main focus, but rather going to situations where you have to throw a dice and, depending on your character, if you are above or below a certain threshold, you'll get something. While failing a dice-throw is bad, it sometimes is best to miss something to get an unexpected result. Yes, there are "Game Over" that can happen if you really screw up things, but then learn from it and don't try to be in the same situation. But what makes Disco Elysium truly outstanding is its setting. The degree of details, the quality of the writing, and, after a few hours, when things start to click together, the reactions of your cop (or his sidekick) will definitely make you laugh, think, care for them,... So far I have just done one run, and am waiting a bit before starting my second one. I'll definitely try something different, less hobo and more shiny, maybe become a full-on brawling fascist ? But I'll definitely like again to wake up hangover in this hotel room and start big quests like "how to grab my tie from the fan ?" or "where the f*** is my left shoe ?". It really puts the "Role Play" in RPG. The true polar opposite of mindless dungeon crawlers. To sum up, one of the games that I'll remember having played for decades (and in a good way). If you read me ZA/UM, please, I beg you, MORE.
