Something a little different

If you like RPGs (retro or modern), this isn't really the type to pass up. I've been a part of this game's community for about 8 years. I've seen the fans change and even the game change (yes, the dev still updates this game every now and again). But even if the fan base may not be as active as it once was, the game still holds up to this day as more than just an RPG. DMODs (Dink MODs) are still being released to this day. If you want to truly get into this game, I'd say there's plenty to do and discover only because of the sheer number of DMODs. So many player created adventures that add to the story of dink, that do something completely different, or straight up surpass the original game in terms of quality and size. If you don't like them, you can even create your own. There's many informative tutorials on the forums (some come as videos, some as document files and some even as DMODs) that will teach you about making your own dink adventure. It's quite a neat little entry point into game creation, if you've never done it. Many members have created amazing reverse engineered scripts for the game that do things we didn't think we're possible before. There's also an open source engine remake called "freedink". All of this to say, Dink Smallwood is an obscure little RPG that, despite it's age and popularity, still continues to expand. You can always give the main game a try (which is a very fun experience), but if you don't find it particularly interesting, I highly recommend at least looking through the in-game DMOD browser and checking out some player created adventures. So go and have fun beheading ducks!

Shut up and DON'T take my money!!!

SHUT UP AND DON'T TAKE MY MONEY! Played original back when it was first released over 20 years ago. Downloaded it again from their websiite Dink Smallwood HD. Then it was broken for windows 11. Then there was a patch to fix it. Then it is now free on GOG. GOG makes it very easy. Works on Win11 easily and has some great features. Works out of the box with controller but game was meant to play on keyboard and is more comfortable with KB&M. It is free anywhere and great that is is on GOG for free. Great thing about the game is the humor and consequences. EG: There is a friendly troll that you are supposed to help. But if you want you can beat the crap out of the troll. You keep hitting it and the troll will start crying saying things like "please don't, I want to be friends with humans." If you ignorantly keep hitting it for fun, you end up killing it. This can't be undone unless you load previous save. If you go to the troll's dead body, Dink will say something like "Let that be a lesson to your people." It is horrible, evil and hilarious at the same time. There are other points in the game where rather than stopping a domestic violence, you can "join in on the fun." If this type of humor is off-putting, then you should avoid, otherwise, proceed.

wow, I remember this..

I played this many years ago when I found it in a box of old games, I didn't really get into the game much due to the clay like aperances that put me off sadly. I do remember punching the guy on the bridge "is that a fly?" & Punching farm animals just because I could. I remember editing levels for hours, making my own sprites etc and digging into the game code to find hilarious comments "and we call this code?".. I also remember asking the Dev if i could use his game to make my-own as I couldn't code to which the dev supprisingly said "feel free to modify the code but don't sell the game it has to be freeware" which was awesome. I never did make a modified game, however I did edit a lot of the games code to do as I wanted (guy on the bridge killable and a few things I can't remember) but it was cool as a kid to be able to edit a working game. Maybe I will give this game another go...

An Amazing Classic

Everyone should try this at least once. It plays like a flash game, but underneath the kiting blob-monsters to grind levels it's exciting- and the progression feels rewarding. There's a few different ways to play a la the skills to level, so it adds some limited replayability. For its time, it's a wonderful hidden gem and definitely worth spending the few hours necessary to beat it.
