This game is a gem
I've been waiting for the working copy of this game for so long. Always tried to find a substitute game but to no avail. I think the only one getting somewhat close was "Oxygen not included" but there was over-abundance of mechanics that just irritated me the longer I've played. Gnomes have simple mechanics, great ambient music, great 3D art style. You start with a couple gnomes on the surface with a tent and campfire and you dig down. Simple premise, but so much fun. You build your entire small civilization underground. Below in the tunnels and caverns you can find loot, random enemies, goblin hideouts, entire underground castles, dragons and even another gnome civilizations some hostile and some not. Mostly you will be digging to expend your base and find resources which will help you progress. Every new building give you access to new technologies. Some resources like iron or crystal appear only on the deeper levels, which encourage you to dig deeper. Technology research is based on gnomes skills. Gnomes acquire skills naturally by doing tasks: digging, cooking, building etc. So basically the more you play the more you discover. Also, there is a neat genealogy mechanic - each gnome finds their partner and their babies inherit a percentage of their skills, so you don't have to train them from nothing. There are some irritating moments. Sometimes there are queues of tasks and some of them are just not done even though there are idle gnomes standing around and you can't force them. No way of prioritizing work either, which can halt production some times. Still it's an old game and should not be voted down on missing mechanics that were introduced in newer games. I mean in what game you can go from campfire to fully equipped kitchen, from wooden outhouse to luxurious bathroom with jacuzzi, from riding hamsters (which looks fun) to riding on hoverboards, from fighting with bare hands or clubs to using lightsabers. It's bonkers and it's fun. Highly recommend
