Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.
Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

Includes the "classic" Diablo 1, the "Modern" version that works without a hitch in Windows 11 AND Hellfire (which has also received the same treatment). And if that's not enough, it is Drag-n-Drop simple to use a 3rd party client such as "DevilutionX" and take advantage of all the bugfixes, QOL improvements and even new content that the community has added. What's not to like?

Always loved this game!
I have several copies of this game from over the years. I'm glad several versions are up and running well on modern systems. So far, Devilutionx is my favorite version, with Belzebub just behind.

Solid Classic
First of all, GOG version works like a charm. I purchase this game in Battle Net first, but it kept crashing on launch. The support was not very helpful. I don't think I have experienced any crashes on GOG. As to the game itself, I missed this one back in the day, got into series with the D2. This is nothing special, of course, today, but is still surprisingly fun and I'd recommend playing it for the story and atmosphere, if you've never experienced it like myself. I can certainly see even now how it became an instant classic upon release. Just make sure you read a good online guide before you go, don't try figuring this out on your own, otherwise you'll face plenty of frustration.

I mean, it just works.
No errors, crashes, troubleshooting required. It just works. It's the classic that started it all. However disappointing Diablo 3 and 4 may be, this is the game that created the ARPG genre (or at least popularized it and put it in the public mind as a genre). The fact it runs on modern hardware and OS (Win 11, Gen 14 intel) is great.
