Now with Hellfire!

Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

Traveler, stay awhile and listen...

Darkness stirs beneath Tristram. An ancient evil sweeps across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces of the puzzle you need to hack through. You have journeyed to the source of this evil. The town of Tristram - now inhabited only by a handful of survivors, broken and twisted by the madness that has befallen them. A cathedral stands there, built over the ruins of an ancient monastery. Eerie lights and ungodly sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls, and that is where you shall venture.

Embark, if you dare, on a quest to destroy The Prime Evil…

  • Experience the legendary action/RPG that influenced an entire genre.
  • Storm Diablo's halls as either a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue - each with unique skills and abilities.
  • Unite to destroy Diablo - up to 4 players can band together via Internet, or play head-to-head via LAN.
  • Unprecedented replayability - over 200 different monsters inhabit Diablo's ever-changing labyrinth. Equip epic items to conquer fearsome bosses and their minions.
  • A spine-chilling story - experience the horror of a world held in the grasp of The Lord of Terror.

Ahhh, fresh meat!

Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.
For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support via aspect ratio-correct upscaling.

  • The most voted game on the GOG.com wishlist, finally trapped in a DRM-free soulstone!
  • Return to the beginning of this dark saga, now in digital format for the first time ever.
  • Better value than Wirt's wares, guaranteed.

Battle.net® multiplayer requires you to configure the Router and Firewall Ports, details can be found here.

Time Machine back to 1996 and beyond

We buy old games, not because they have the best graphics and the best UI. We buy them because this is our time machine back 10, 20, 30 years. Diablo is such a time machine, and is just as great as it was in 1996. Poor graphics....Well, to that I say use your imagination to fill in the holes. Poor UI...it's not that bad once you get use to it. So glad GOG put this on their store. Can't wait until they get Warcraft 1, Warcraft 2....definitely an instant buys for me.

Great

Great game. Saw the most "helpful" review say something like it's expensive for a game "you might quit after a few minutes". Well, you might quit any game after a few minutes. I'm 13 hours into this game and about to play on Hell difficulty. Anyway. I don't remember it being this easy; I remember playing a looooooooot.. for years, before, completing the game (well, I completed it many times over).. but this time I've only had this for some days, and my char is really jacked. I have almost all my inventory full of 5k stacks of gold, which I have to leave in town when I fight, because I need my inventory to store mana bottles. I guess I'm a better player now than in 98 or whenever.. back when I was 16.. <3

Still great

This game is absolutely worth spending $10 for even today, it's a small price to pay for a readily available copy that works without fuss on modern Windows and doesn't require you to keep a CD in your optical drive (or to skirt ethical computing if you want to play on a laptop lacking an optical drive..) If you are open minded about the fact that this game was released in 1996 and can put aside any expectations based on Diablo II you'll find a game that is not only well ahead of its time and ground breaking, but one that is worth your time. The levels are randomly generated, the quests you get are are randomly chosen from a pool, the mobs and enemies you'll encounter are randomly chosen as well. I have replayed this game at least once or twice a year since the late 1990s and still find things that surprise me at times. The only thing that would have made this release better is if it included the Hellfire expansion.. but I'm willing to bet the rights/licensing to that old expansion pack is well.. in hell.

Still my favorite

I was almost 9 when this came out and I still remember when my father brought it home. Everything from the dark gritty atmosphere, soundtrack and visuals still hold up today if you ask me. Sure the game is a couple decades hold but don't let that keep you from playing a great classic whether new to the series or wanting to revisit Tristram. This is still my favorite game of the series even over D2 for the reasons stated above, it just hasn't came close since. Of course the age shows by how clunky it can feel, the controls aren't exactly great but you get used to them and it'll become second nature in no time. It warrants a few playthroughs worth till you may get burnt out on it as it doesn't have as much packed into it as D2 or D3 but it's still worth to go through it even once. The multiplayer is even better if you have a friend or two to play with. Just don't do what I accidentally did and chain lightning your friends to oblivion over and over...friend's don't let friend's chain lightning...He won't play with me no more hahahaha.

Great Game.

The game is great and I am glad to see it rereleased, but I wish I could download it on mac. This is the only diablo game I cannot get on my mac. I just would like to be able to play the entire series in one place. The original disk worked with mac.
