Now with Hellfire!

Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

Traveler, stay awhile and listen...

Darkness stirs beneath Tristram. An ancient evil sweeps across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces of the puzzle you need to hack through. You have journeyed to the source of this evil. The town of Tristram - now inhabited only by a handful of survivors, broken and twisted by the madness that has befallen them. A cathedral stands there, built over the ruins of an ancient monastery. Eerie lights and ungodly sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls, and that is where you shall venture.

Embark, if you dare, on a quest to destroy The Prime Evil…

  • Experience the legendary action/RPG that influenced an entire genre.
  • Storm Diablo's halls as either a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue - each with unique skills and abilities.
  • Unite to destroy Diablo - up to 4 players can band together via Internet, or play head-to-head via LAN.
  • Unprecedented replayability - over 200 different monsters inhabit Diablo's ever-changing labyrinth. Equip epic items to conquer fearsome bosses and their minions.
  • A spine-chilling story - experience the horror of a world held in the grasp of The Lord of Terror.

Ahhh, fresh meat!

Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.
For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support via aspect ratio-correct upscaling.

  • The most voted game on the GOG.com wishlist, finally trapped in a DRM-free soulstone!
  • Return to the beginning of this dark saga, now in digital format for the first time ever.
  • Better value than Wirt's wares, guaranteed.

Battle.net® multiplayer requires you to configure the Router and Firewall Ports, details can be found here.

Most atmospheric Hack & Slack to date

I first played this game at 12 years in 2002, and since then it's laways had a special place in my heart. The darkness and unhingedness of the original Diablo intrigued me back then, scared me so bad I had to stop playing in the Catacombs (second area of the game after the Dungeons), and since then come back to it to play a couple levels periodically every couple years. While the controls and UI leave something to be desired and have definitely not aged well, the gameplay is sufficiently demanding to force you to keep an eye out, and not so hard that you have to throw away the mouse in frustration. I personally do not miss the more complex item management of its successor, and evne though that aspect of Diablo 2 is marginally better, Diablo 2 absolutely takes the backseast in the atmosphere department. The only other Hack & Slash I played so far that comes close to Diablo in terms of atmosphere is Path of Exile, but that's very situational. The graphics are not pretty I guess, but I don't mind them at all. I think they work just fine, even today, for what they are designed to do. It's the kind of disturbing horror atmosphere that either needs very rough graphics or obscenely realistic graphics for maximum effect, so it's fine. While it has overall aged to a point where I'd say it probably won't be the main game in your library, it's great for short sittings once in a while. There is simply no game like it, and at this point I doubt there ever will be. Personal suggestion: use The Hell mod. Improves the game in many ways, most notably it makes it evne more disturbing. Another personal suggestion: do give Hellfire a try. Many people seem to think it stinks, but it's really just more of the same, with a pinch of icky creepiness on top.

Worth It

This is not just the classic version but an updated LAN capable version with HD graphics. Worth every penny they are asking for it when you take these things into consideration. It is also completely compatible with windows 10.

Epic classic -- Must play/have

I'm just finding out myself that there are some pretty big YT channels that NEVER played any of games from this franchise before. People, you need to play this classic (Diablo 2 as well) they are one of those games you will regret for never playing. So addictive, and far too ahead of their times (especially Diablo 2). Hopefully we will get Diablo 4 in the future that is more like first 2 games in this series. Oh sweet childhood memories, the most precious ones -- utterly worth 9e!

Great game if viewed in context

Sure, this game shows its age, and if you're looking for a modern style arpg, you may be disappointed. But I think anyone looking at this knows what they're getting into. My review is based on 1) The game being fantastic for what it is, and 2) this being a fantastic package/presentation of the original material. The updated version runs really smooth and looks great on a modern monitor without comprimising the look or feel of the game. Although I only plan to use the updated version, bundling the untouched classic game with classic bnet multiplayer support a really good addition for those who would use it. Really good to have this game available without the headaches involved in getting the original to run on a Windows 10 machine. Here's hoping they do D2 next! Even without a full remaster, a bit of upscaling and tuning for modern monitors would go a long way towards making it less headache-inducing to play.
