Now with Hellfire!

Originally developed by Synergistic Software and released in 1997, Hellfire was not an official Blizzard product and did not carry Blizzard’s endorsement or label. Despite that, in response to Diablo players who have expressed a desire to experience the content, Blizzard has given the OK for it to be included as a free add-on with Diablo purchases on GOG.COM.

Hellfire offers a non-canonical single-player storyline where players must defeat a powerful demon named Na-Krul who is threatening Tristram. The expansion also adds a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Hellfire will be accessible while launching the original Diablo.

Traveler, stay awhile and listen...

Darkness stirs beneath Tristram. An ancient evil sweeps across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces of the puzzle you need to hack through. You have journeyed to the source of this evil. The town of Tristram - now inhabited only by a handful of survivors, broken and twisted by the madness that has befallen them. A cathedral stands there, built over the ruins of an ancient monastery. Eerie lights and ungodly sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls, and that is where you shall venture.

Embark, if you dare, on a quest to destroy The Prime Evil…

  • Experience the legendary action/RPG that influenced an entire genre.
  • Storm Diablo's halls as either a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue - each with unique skills and abilities.
  • Unite to destroy Diablo - up to 4 players can band together via Internet, or play head-to-head via LAN.
  • Unprecedented replayability - over 200 different monsters inhabit Diablo's ever-changing labyrinth. Equip epic items to conquer fearsome bosses and their minions.
  • A spine-chilling story - experience the horror of a world held in the grasp of The Lord of Terror.

Ahhh, fresh meat!

Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.
For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support via aspect ratio-correct upscaling.

  • The most voted game on the GOG.com wishlist, finally trapped in a DRM-free soulstone!
  • Return to the beginning of this dark saga, now in digital format for the first time ever.
  • Better value than Wirt's wares, guaranteed.

Battle.net® multiplayer requires you to configure the Router and Firewall Ports, details can be found here.

Vote With Your Wallet

The biggest hurdles to playing DIABLO today is availability. Whereas Blizzard offers DIABLO 2 (and the expansion) thru it's Battle.net launcher, the same love isn't shown to the original title. Practically the only place you could purchase D1 was thru Ebay or an Amazon retailer. Not anymore. GOG and Blizzard have solved this problem beautifully. Paid full price with 0 regrets. I support fully games like this over mobile crentric newer interations. Vote with your wallet. Now, on to the nostalgia.

Good in its day but hasn't aged well

I have owned this game for a long time & spent hours playing it & still have my physical copy sitting proudly on the shelf. It is where it lives as it has been surpassed in every way by Diablo 2. The basics of the gameplay in D1 blew a young me away, but once I had my hands on D2, Diablo 1 never stood a chance. Visually the game hasn't aged well, every hack-n-slash looter since has copied heavily from D1 including its sequels & it isn't really hard to find good alternatives to D1 which are superior in every way for example Torchlight 1&2 or Grimm Dawn. D1 is an old game & unfortunately the low res graphics & dated gameplay really means you should only buy it to relive it for the sake of nostalgia as it has been surpassed so much by all those that came after it. Another play-through could have been justified if hellfire had been included with the base game for the same price, but alias it was not to be!

D like Damn

This game is something you ought to play. Even if you hate it - you must play it. it's kind of like required reading at school... you can complain, you can cry, but either you read it or you wont pass... This is chunk of history that cannot be forgotten. It's unique treasure, a symbol- that remind us of days long gone, when games were still original and cutting edge, when games were done when they are done, not when investors says it, when company did not need to show every year xx% increase in revenue to stay above water.... good old days. What about game itself? Hearing legendary phrase "The sanctity of this place has been fouled" after entering church is well.. speak for itself. In your quest you will not only fight against monstrosities, but crappy control and poor animation also. But still! it's not important. Hearing "aahh.... fresh meat" for the very first time is worth some troubles. It's like first time intercourse... can hurt a bit but you do it anyway... So, don't waste time on this page - just spend some money and play game that was one of its kind, It's worth to reminiscent a bit, and is definitely worth ~10 USD you would spend on McDonalds anyway..

Known by millions as a great Classic

That said, it's a bit hard to understand how they are charging $10 for a game over 20 years old without even including the Hellfire expansion(which added the monk class(and also the hidden Bard and Barbarian classes) and new spells+dungeons). On Diablo itself, it probably looks a little worse on modern HD monitors. It did have the very fun feature of any class being able to learn spells if the hero could get their stats high enough. It is a flexibility most games ever do not have. This game introduced the multi-part name system for enchanted weapons, such as "The Lord's Axe of the Moon" and had many fun and cool unique items such as the sword "The Grandfather". The point and click combat system works well, with blocking and hits reasonably animated. Exploring is more important than in the sequel, and there is no grinding like for gems/runes in Diablo 2. Unless you want to keep restarting your game I suppose, as enemies do not respawn. I was still finding games online in I think it was 2013, and with the game on GOG perhaps there will be a surge in online play, I do not know. A few tips: Carry some kind of ranged weapon/attack for enemies behind barred openings or across water/lava. Use choke points such as doors. Be aware that different kinds of enemies have different resistances. Buy stat elixirs. There is a simple duplication cheat for those that like to cheat. Fire wall in a room full of enemies is great. All in all it's a great game said by critics to be one of the best of all time, and a great snapshot in gaming evolution. However I have an old disc copy and so I will not consider buying it until the Hellfire expansion is included. I hope that either we can still unlock the hidden classes or GoG or Sierra unlocks them. To the person who thinks someone might quit after a few minutes, I have two suggestions. GOG's satisfaction guarantee firstly.
