Explore, fight, talk and hack your way through a rich cyberpunk world in this 2D action-RPG!
Wanted dead by a mysterious and far-reaching organization, you will traverse the futuristic city of Harbor Prime and make unexpected allies on your quest to bring down the system! In this cyberpunk adventure inspired by Blade Runner and Neuromancer, you are free to choose your playstyle: will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, a diplomat or a straightforward gunfighter?
Designed as a throwback to earlier 2D platforming and action games combined with modern RPG elements, Dex offers real-time combat, a mature storyline and interactive dialogues.
Customize your character’s skills, equipment and even augmentations – implants which grant you superhuman abilities and open up new paths within the game’s open world.
A revolutionary hacking mechanic also lets you dive into Cyberspace: overcome viruses and intrusion countermeasures to deactivate turrets, overload devices, steal corporate data and cripple your enemies!
Rare blend of realism and creative vision: Realistic action, mature storyline, and complex character interactions combined with hand-drawn characters, animations, and environments, arcade-style melee combat, and an original conception of cyberspace.
Multiple paths: Operate in physical reality or in Cyberspace. Overcome obstacles using your skills, weapons, augmentations…
Meaningful character building: Will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, or a straightforward gunfighter? Improve your character and gear to unlock gameplay-changing upgrades that reinforce and customize your gameplay style.
Unique hacking mechanic: Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants…
Neo-cyberpunk: Story deeply inspired by the cyberpunk novels of William Gibson and other classical cyberpunk authors, flavored with a contemporary concept of augmented reality.
Rich game world and diverse level design: Visit diverse locations in Harbor Prime, a futuristic city complete with luxurious skyscrapers, run-down shantytowns, and seedy red-light districts. Take part in street brawls, steal corporate data, overcome environmental hazards, and, of course, stay alive – no easy task.
Three special outfits: The Samio Cyberwear allows you to regenerate your Focus when hacking, the Euroforce BattleRig offers physical protection against bullets, and the Armagear InvisiSuit can make you invisible! You’ll have to be on the lookout for clues about their location, and face serious opposition before earning them!
* The writing is awful.
* The VA feels like people were pulled off the street for a fiver.
* The combat is a jankfest.
* Music is forgettable.
* The "hacking" might as well inflict literal brain damage.
* The graphics are hideous, choppy and a legitimate detriment to gameplay, coupled with wonky animation that wouldn't look out of place in a sloppy shareware game from the early 2000s. Goodness knows, the UI feels the same.
And there's a really unnecessary scene in which a doctor in an essential quest tries to rape the protagonist. So edgy /s

This game is a real shame. I can see the love put into it and under the grime and grit there is serious potential to make something special. However this game doesn't just miss the mark, it throws the damn gun rather then fire it.
I really wanted to like this game. The cyber punk vibe is pungent and interesting. The dialogue is decent to good. The still art is great. I really liked Dex, the main character.
The animations are kind of chunky and the combat is very clunky and clumsy. Moment to moment, it's just not fun to play.
I just can't recommend this game.
Dex is a strange mix of 2D platformer - rolling shooter - proper RPG and, for me, story teller. The plot is pretty standard for a cyberpunk game. Default Evil Corp ltd. vs. Hackers of the People. Evil Guys have a Cunning Plan and this is where the heroine comes in. Dex can connect to augmented reality wireless. As you've probably guessed, hacking and AR will be integral for the story.
Hacking stuff is really fun in this game. Unlike some other titles, Dex's devs didn't try to mimic real world (which usually ends badly) and instead gave us completely separated "minigame" mechanic: Dex's AR alter ego is free to roam in the AR world, dodging programs-enemies and shooting them. You'll encounter black holes (creating gravity), firewalls (ouch) and plain old traps. Kind of a tower-defense, from the point of the attacker. Neat!
The English voiceover is fine and Czech subtitles are translated using Czech names, jokes and events - having little skills in other languages I can only hope other they received the same amount of care, because it'd be shame to suffer from word-to-word translations.
The only major downside I see in Dex is the game lacks some kind of "middle" difficulty, since the "hard" one can be - at least in the very beginning - really unforgiving.
It really depends which augmentations you buy at what stage of the game, but luckily you'll get somewhat guided by the quests and the rest can be fixed with in-game credits, not by having to load an earlier save. That being said, _do_ save often, since some of the death traps are not really obvious.
It took me 15-20 hours to complete my playthrough, and I'm on the explorative edge of playstyle. The story is pretty much linear with the edge choices (help person A or B) having trivial impact on the main story. The fights and hacking are fun enough to drive me through the game, but not enough for me to replay within a year. But within two? Likely.
Title says it all.
If you like sci-fi futuristic deus-ex'y atmosphere and world and you like platformers - you will like this game. Controls (or battle system in general) kinda need some getting used to them, but other than that this game can get you stuck with it for some time while you explore the world it provides.
