In my 20-odd-years of gaming, I've witnessed only a few fan-made graphical/gameplay overhaul mods actually (whether almost or completely) making it to the end. The most prominent ones (e.g. Black Mesa (sans Xen) and Deus Ex: Revision) indeed took their time to get there, as did some smaller-scale but in no way less impressive mods such as Jedi Knight Enhanced for Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, and the Duke Nukem 3D High Resolution Pack for the eponymous game.
It is indeed a grand achievement for any creator to smash through the roadblocks and just get their project done - and in this case, getting the final mod published through official channels. And it's always a step to the better direction to have the final result featured on GOG.com!
So once again kudos and congratulations to Caustic Creative for their achievements - for (as proven by DXREV's current Steam rating) time has vindicated their efforts. :]
The best away to play this mod is to set up the gameplay style to Biomod in the settings. This grant a new experience in not only the maps but the gameplay will change as well. Some changes such as having a bio canister for an already installed aug will be treated as an upgrade by the med bot, drone at level 4 can interact with objects and hack terminals, special weapons like Paul's baton to knock mibs and commandos if you play non-lethal.
I loved playing this mod on Steam, and I love playing it on GOG. My main complaint is that the current version is extremely outdated (2021), whereas the newest version just came out on Steam (1.7.4). You have to update it manually to 1.7.3.1, which is the closest "newest" version pre-1.7.4. It seems Revision devs don't care about GOG that much.
My rating will improve once those devs start giving the same good treatment to GOG as on Steam
Do not listen to the 1 Star Reviews, there are people that are trying to take away from these mod creator's work and success.
They have done a fantastic job revising the levels in Deus Ex, such a good job that my friend was actually able to play through it without getting annoyed by the far outdated barren levels that were in Vanilla. It includes the Shifter, and BioMod gameplay modes; as well as Revision's own default mode.
The developers are actively patching and making it better without pay or compensation. Yet, there are still hardcore 'GMDX fanboys' who think it's necessary to "pick sides" and write terribly negative reviews, that frankly... have ZERO constructive criticism, and are almost worthy of being flagged as spam.
If you are new to Deus Ex, I would suggest Revision over any other Mod. There is a reason this mod is official and others are not. The polish and years of work that went into this are commendable to say the LEAST.
-Thanks and Congratulations to the Revision Mod team for their successful mod.
This is one of the best fan remake/mods I have ever played and Caustic Creative deserves all the official support that Square Enix gave them.
Fans have made the ultimate version of Deus Ex and I easily prefer Revision over vanilla now.
The game has more depth, restored content (including features that the original dev team wanted to implement but could not) and improved graphics.
You can even play this game with the new maps and updated graphics but vanilla gameplay, essentially making it Deus Ex: Master Quest. The revised maps may take some getting used to and some of the newer mechanics but it's still a great experience and an improvement to one of the best games ever made. The newer maps have many interesting things in them and they make for an all-new experience with surprises for Deus Ex fans.
The updated OpenAL 3D audio is also phenomenal, it makes this already immersive game even more immersive. And while the updated DirectX 9 and OpenGL renderers are good, you can install DirectX 10 and 11 renderers to crank the graphics up to 11, and it looks fantastic, like playing Deus Ex with RTX On. It is still playable (albeit low-framerate) on my low-end Ryzen 5 3400G + Radeon Vega 11 iGPU PC and with mid-range PCs with discrete graphics, you can get those beautifully upgraded graphics with very little impact to performance.
That said, I would have two suggestions for Caustic Creative to further improve the experience, fully make vanilla Deus Ex obsolete without Revision, and bring Revision closer to perfection:
Number one: I would want the option to play with the original retail maps at the start of a new game rather than being forced to play with the Revision maps, here are the fixed retail maps: https://www.dxm.be/navigator.php5?lang=en&content=202
Number two: The Helios Texture Overhaul mod has really great-looking textures that may be even better than New Vision and HDTP, and can still work alongside them: https://www.moddb.com/mods/helios-texture-overhaul
