Deus Ex™ GOTY Edition

Many games claim to have many paths to choose from, but Deus Ex is one of the few to actually achieve this. Everything in this game is absolutely polished: the music, the graphics (which haven't aged that much), the atmosphere and the story all match perfectly in this unique experience that is Deus Ex. It blends RPG and FPS with mastery. With the many skills available, you can really be the character you want: a vicious killer - shooting and blowing up everything; a skilled marksman, killing from afar; an unstoppable hacker, using the enemies defenses against themselves; a stealthy ghost... And it definitely rewards exploration, whether by giving you the passcode to a locked storage room, or by allowing you to bypass a room full of guards with a hidden vent. I remember having a blast replaying the first mission over and over again, spending a long time in the UNATCO building and each time trying a different approach to finish the mission. And there was literally no limit to the new ways I could find. Using E.M.P grenades to disable robots, hacking the system and making them attack the enemy, using non-lethal weapons, going around the building and finding a hidden entrance... There's no limit to what you could do and how much fun you can have with this game. You can replay the game as an entirely different character and have a completely different and fun experience. It can't be recommended enough.

It's all been said in the other reviews, but let me just add that if you haven't had the Deus Ex experience yet, you ARE missing out. Yes, the graphics are dated and some elements of the user interface leave a bit to be desired, and the same could be said of the damage modeling. However, small hiccups aside, this is still - by far - the most memorable journey I've ever taken from within the construct of a game. DX received some criticism for being a "jack of all trades", a little RPG, a little Shooter, a little Graphic-Novel-esque... But what the game does so well, is it lets you uncover the game's story - the conspiracy - for yourself, first-hand, with whatever means suit your style. (And as a side note, the story itself is actually built on existing real-world conspiracies, both alleged and in a few cases, partially confirmed). This is a hugely ambitious game that actually pulls it off, and in every area that matters - over-delivers on its promises. It has since become the measuring stick for all games that attempt to follow in similar style, including the sequels. To date, nothing has come close to creating the sense of immersion and player-driven discovery of a virtual world, inside an action/adventure game. Deus Ex is ironically named. The writing mechanism ("deus ex machina") is a plot device where a crisis or problem is solved through the sudden appearance of a far-fetched solution that essentially just drops out of the sky - and usually just in the nick of time. It's a tactic used by lazy writers everywhere. Fortunately, Deus Ex (the game) takes no such shortcuts. The plot, and the unraveling of the conspiracy, is completely fleshed out, and vastly comprehensive to the player who is willing to explore DX's virtual world in depth. And so there you have it. My take on why Deus Ex is currently, and likely will be for a very long time - the most unforgettable gaming experience I've ever had. Buy it, play it. You'll thank me later.

This is so far the best game I have ever played it is so simple the story is amazing so is the characters you are so free in the game, and you when finish the you can restart and have a completely different adventure I think this should be the top rated game in the world not that fortnite crap or the filipin Witcher because Deus Ex is not just the best PC game but the best game of all time

Ion Storm accomplished something truly special here. You take the role as JC Denton, a super soldier who finds himself entangled in a deep global conspiracy. Travel the world and uncover the invisible hands that pull the world's strings. There are plenty of games and films with dystopian near-future settings, but Deus Ex presents a vast wealth of lore, characters and world building that is rare to find in a single entry. Plus, whether it's politics, technology, or philosophy, everything is presented in a relatable and plausible way. For example, the first mission gives you opportunity to capture a terrorist leader alive; he then makes some valid points grounded in real-life history. Everything in the game has a familiar basis, which saves things from devolving from overly-futuristic fantasy. This presentation is extremely compelling, as you find yourself questioning the motives of the powers-that-be right alongside JC. Also, the sheer amount of content means you will return to Deus Ex time and time again, finding something new with each playthrough. The world is intricately designed, and you are often rewarded for going off the beaten path. The immersive world and story stand strong despite a dated visual presentation. While perfectly serviceable, the characters are blocky and stiff even by the standards of when this game was originally released. The environment geometry tends to be simple but captures a strong mood thanks to good use of lighting and shadow. The music is absolutely gorgeous and, at times, haunting. Gameplay-wise, it's an RPG at heart with skills and inventory to manage. You can invest in your desired playstyle, which can be anything from a pure-stealth, non-lethal approach to a walking tank equipped with rocket launchers and flamethrowers. Though, expect clunky combat unless you invest accordingly. The game features "augmentations" which give you superhuman abilities and an additional level of customization. Overall, a must play.

Wanna see for yourself why is this game regarded, multiple times, as one of the, if not THE, best games ever made?, even after it's excellent 2011 prequel was released?. Well, this was, along with System Shock, one of the first titles to combine multiple genres, something very common with today's games. This title combined RPG elements into an FPS game, upgrading and improving your character's stats over the course of the game. Also, it was heralded for having multiple choices to progress to a single level, wich also had multiple routes; want to cruise through a level undetected?, guns blazing?, it was all your choice. The only downside I could give to this game is the dated graphics and the somewhat clunky UI, but this is a 2000 game using the first Unreal engine, it can also be played with HD resolutions natively and, if you know how to tinker with your graphics card drivers, you can add extra eye candy by adding antialiasing and texture filters, making the game somewhat less dated and a bit more pleasing to the eye. I already have this game in Steam, but there's absolutely no reason not to buy the GOG version, wich includes it's excelent soundtrack, along with all the extra GOG treats you get, especially if you're somewhat paranoid with DRM, wich this release has absolutely none, zilch, nein. So, what the heck are you waiting for!?, BUY IT!.
