Deus Ex: Revision a mod which drastically overhauls the FPS/RPG masterpiece while preserving its greatness, is now available for FREE on GOG.com!

The year is 2052 and the world is a dangerous and chaotic place. Terrorists operate openly - killing thousands; drugs, disease and pollution kill even more. The world's economies are close to collapse and the gap between the insanely wealthy and the desperately poor grows ever wider. Worst of all, an ages old conspiracy bent on world domination has decided that the time is right to emerge from the shadows and take control.

Key Features:

  • Real role-playing from an immersive 3D, first-person perspective. The game includes action, character interaction and problem solving.
  • Realistic, recognizable locations. Many of the locations are built from actual blueprints of real places set in a near future scenario.
  • A game filled with people rather than monsters. This creates empathy with the game characters and enhances the realism of the game world.
  • Rich character development systems: Skills, augmentations, weapon and item selections and multiple solutions to problems ensure that no two players will end the game with similar characters.
  • Multiple solutions to problems and character development choices ensure a varied game experience. Talk, fight or use skills to get past obstacles as the game adapts itself to your style of play.
  • Strong storyline: Built on "real" conspiracy theories, current events and expected advancements in technology. If it's in the game, someone, somewhere believes

Killed all first player games for me

In a way this was a bad game for me as I couldn't play anther mindless shooter game again after playing it and there aren't enough games like it. This is just the perfect game with multiply ways to play each level and is there really anything I need to say about it that others haven't?

A true classic

I remember playing Deus Ex the first time... it blew me away then, and even the several times I've played through it again since have been massively enjoyable for me. Deus Ex is one of the first FPS/RPG hybrids out there, and although it does of course push it a bit towards the FPS side a bit - it balances the sides admirably. Want to charge in gung ho with guns blazing? Invest in combat skills and augs and pump away. Or you could sneak and hack your way through the game. But unlike many games even of today it didn't limit your choices to gameplay effects - the way you interacted with others, the way you do your job, all conspired to form a pattern of what kind of person JC was and how others would react to you later in the game. The story, while cheesy (to be completely fair) still draws you in. The acting is a bit wooden but you just don't care - the story is played out in a way that makes you really feel a part of the world in the 2050s, aided greatly by the surprisingly vibrant, darkly atmospheric world - it may not have changed every second but it nevertheless felt alive. Well, yes, rants aside, I highly recommend this game to just about anybody who finds it even mildly interesting. You won't be disappointed.

A must-play masterpiece

The myth about this game being reinstalled somewhere in the world anytime the name is mentioned is probably true, considering I finally played it on GOG and reached the end of the game this time. For some players, this game is considered to be the perfect game for a lot of reasons and a lot of things have been written on this game over the years so I will make it short. - Scenario: a depth, detail, themes, dialogs that have not been equalled in the video-game history even today. - Freedom of choice and gameplay: any mission can be done in many many ways, with many approaches. Gameplay: very playable and modern gameplay and interface. -Sound: tons of very immersive dialogs and superb soundtrack. This game still is a reference for many gamers today. The concept of writing a review for this game can be questioned since Deus Ex has become more than a video game and is a monument for the whole genre.

DX1 compared to DX:HR and DX:MD

Most of the reviews here very accurately depict Deus Ex the game on its own. But if you are new to DX1 you most probably come from playing DX: Human Revolution and/or DX: Mankind Divided. Sure the graphics are not good, it was subpar even when the game came out in 2000. You can get used to it. So why is DX1 still better than all the sequels? Reason #1: it has MUCH better writing. Don't get me wrong, HR and MD were great, but DX1 has more memorable conversations, a huge amount of optional-to-read information about the world, easter eggs, and the story is simply better than all other sequels. Reason #2: Decisions matter more. I haven't felt the impact of my decisions in HR and MD to matter as much as they did in DX1. Also, many decisions are made by your ACTIONS not selecting Option B instead of Option A in a conversation. Reason #3: You are presented with situations, and it is up to you how you solve them. Both HR and MD gives you playthrough choices by offering certain routes (guns blazing, stealth, social) but they are rather clear-cut. Don't like the vents? Go in guns blazing. In DX1 there are no pre-made routes you are intended to follow. You can be VERY creative how you approach problems. You can invent solutions even the game's creators did not expect. The other DXes do not offer you this kind of freedom. Reason #4: while HR's and MD's game world, music and atmosphere is excellent, DX1 is better. It's music is more memorable, the game's world is both depressing and somewhat light hearted at the same time, instead of the doom and gloom of the sequels. Reason #5: much deeper RPG aspects. You might prefer the simplicity of the sequels, but I prefer the deeper system of skills and augmentations being separate. DX1 is one of the best games ever made and while the prequels were both very good games, but they still somewhat miss the "divine spark" that DX1 has and what makes DX1 a _perfect_ game.

One of my favourites!

Deux Ex is one of my favourite games of all time! What can i say that hasn´t been said about this game? Well, not much. The last time i played it is over a decade ago, but i still remember scenes out of it, like the conversation with the bar tender and others, certain areas in the game, happenings. Most games i forget rather quickly, some may be remembered as being good, a few have these memorable moments, which have that special something.
