Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive

There is no doubt that this is one of the best strategy games ever. The atmosphere, the characters, the gameplay - everything is unique. It even holds up very well today. I decided to play it again before I go to Desperados III. Yet, a few things have to be changed to run Desperados I on modern systems. This version is playable, but I experienced heavy stuttering when scrolling. Here are some tips how I got the perfect gaming experience.( I have an I5 7600k, 16GB Ram and an older GTX 970. I use Windows 10.) 1. Go to this website and download DDraw File https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat/releases 2. Put the file in your game folder. 3. Go to Nvidia Panel and turn off "Vsync" there. This is important to get satisfying game speed. When I did so, the game played very smooth, scrolling over the screen didn´t stutter anymore and the movements of the characters were very fast. BUT I also got heavy coil wine on my GTX 970 which was very annoying when playing the game. So I went to the Nvidia Panel again and changed "max FPS" to 150. Coil Wine is completely gone now and the game runs PERFECT. The high amount of FPS seemed to have caused the wine coil on my GTX 970. The only thing left is that the game crashes sometims, but it occurs Hope this helps to get the perfect Desperados experience on modern systems. By the way, it is often recommended to run the game in compatibility mode (Win XP, SP3). I don´t recommend that, because when I do so, the game slows down in some cases / areas. I run the game in Win 10 mode. Please support this almost forgotten genre and buy games like Desperados III and Shadow Tactics so that we get more games like these.

It's a great game, and I was hoping they would fix it here in GoG, but now they just released on Steam and it's still broken. I you play on a pre Windows 7 OS it should work fine, but in Win 7 and 8, it's unplayable.

Linux review. I almost finished this game (level 21 currently) on Ubuntu 18.04 with AMD and NVIDIA GPU. Installation works fine, This games works in 4:3, 16:10 and 16:9 aspect ratios, no lags, no visual bugs either. This package contains bonus level - demo. I did however encounter one game breaking bug in level 3. Right at the end of the level, After you are done shooting with the gatling gun, the game hides your mouse pointer and you cannot do anything. It is stuck before the cutscene. I found workaround. If you hit right mouse button (so you will leave the gatling gun) right before the cutscene everything works fine.

The game itself is good (played it befor), however with windows 10 the game play like a slideshow (from 0 to 12 fps at best). Unless there comes a new patch to support W10 i do not recommend this game for W10 users

This is a favourite of my teenage years that I was delighted to see on GOG. However, running it on a Win7 laptop, it crashes to desktop with depressing regularity. The game itself is as good and as lusciously drawn as I remember, but when I can't get past the second mission, it doesn't really represent value for money. Any chance of a patch?
