Description
After the events in Deponia, Rufus came to his senses. He's grown prudent, amicable, kind and caring, without any intention to cause major mayhem just to further his own selfish ends. It seems he is far from chaining himself to flaming saw blades, training torpedo-dolphins or plundering platypus nests. Or is he? Eventually, it's a flaming saw blade that “persuades” Goal to stay on Deponia once more, splitting her personality into three parts in the process, each aspect of her consciousness stored to a different cartridge. So it's up to Rufus and his remarkable charm to persuade Goal's personalities to fuse into one again, make his way to Elysium with her and save Deponia from certain Chaos while he's at it. Join Rufus on his way through the vast area of the Floating Black Market, meet new, bizarre characters and reunite with familiar faces.

The second adventure on Deponia tells a unique, self contained story playable without further knowledge of the first installment. Challenging puzzles, elaborate dialogues and unique wacky humor ensure a truly hilarious gaming experience. Fans of the first game will discover new aspects of familiar characters' backgrounds and have many questions answered.
  • Strange and wacky devices ranging from torpedo dolphins, burning saw blades, and even anti-gravity socks.
  • Challenging puzzles coupled with hours of dialogue bristling with humor.
  • Bizarre characters--both old and new--each with their own quirks of personality.

Just get that cat's food.

You will understand the title of this review after you play the game. Is related with the the fact some people resent the game has become more cruel. This is true for some events in the game. What I have to say about that claim is: If you come to a Deponia game looking for kindness or political correctness you are searching in the wrong place, please leave. With that out of my system... Deponia II is a great point&click. The mechanics are the same the first game has, so they are smooth. The puzzles are logical. I only peep a walkthrough twice. Almost nothing by my standards. The story is comical, absurd and acid. The main character is an inconsiderated delusional jerk . The rest of the characters aren't too deep but are interesting any way. There are a couple of argumental twist. Happily both of them are well justified.

Hugely overrated

The following review applies to both the first and the second Deponia game. The third one I have not played. I find this game to be hugely overrated, but then again it seems to be a "love it or hate it" case. The good: The 2D graphics are quite beautiful, although cheaply animated. Some of the puzzles are good, some are rather obtuse. The bad: The main character is an asshole. This is obviously meant to be funny - it's not. It's just annoying. The humour in general is never funny in the slightest. And this is not a translation issue: I played it in its original German, which is my native language. The humour is just inane and offensive, never funny - very German in that regard, unfortunately. The story is servicable at best, mostly cliché and unoriginal, as are the characters. Conversations drag on too long and (see above) are meant to be funny, but instead are just terribly boring. Some of the puzzles are rather obtuse. Moreover, I disliked the open structure of the game in the beginning. I know many people like this, but I just found this to be ovewhelming and boring: Too many places to examine and too many boring conversations to have at once. The only reason I bought and suffered through the second Deponia game is that I was brainwashed by the critical acclaim (at least in the German gaming press).

Stay for Goal

What you came for isn't that relevant. This game is about Goal. Many reviewers said the first Deponia game was a love story at its heart. I didn't feel it. Goal just felt like a suitcase I was lugging around because it contained a valuable key. This one, though, really ingratiated Goal to me. Several additional characters also feel more fleshed out, though my memory might be biased because I played Goodbye Deponia already. The rest of the game was a blur. Unfortunately I felt the puzzle quality decreased, both the inventory based puzzles and especially the non-inventory ones. I can only remember one non-inventory based puzzle, even though I spent more time with this game than the first one. It doesn't matter though because Goal is the only thing that matters on Deponia. I think Rufus feels the same.

I dunno

The game continues where the first one took off. Everything goes well until the Arena, then it's either the developer was stupid or the game was broken - nothing in the fight works, the game literally cheats you into losing every single time. I've spent 1 whole hour, split in 4 parts, trying to beat the arena, which is a pure exercise in frustration. If it's the editor's idea of "subverting the damsel in distress" trope, it wasn't a good idea, since it's all looks like fanservice anyway, if it's the author's idea of "subverting the stupid quests" it's not a good idea either. There's a reason I bought this game and not a myriad of other quests, because at least this one didn't suffer from pixel hunting and morornic placement of puzzles. Uninstalled and won't return to it, really I don't recommend buying it. Now onwards to Part 3.
