Description
Rufus is not a pleasant guy. Ill-tempered and entirely too convinced of his own greatness, he lives at the edge of a small settlement somewhere in the most remote sector of the garbage-covered planet Deponia. He dreams of a better life in the floating cities of wealth and beauty high above the planet surface. When the angelic Goal falls from these privileged spheres down into a neighboring trash heap, Rufus sees his chance. He decides to bring the unconscious beauty back to her home. Only a vague hope of making it off Deponia at first, he soon formulates an unscrupulous plan, as he learns that he is a dead ringer for Goal’s upper-class husband. The planned handover is only the beginning of a wild chase across Deponia full of twists, turns and mystifying mix-ups.

Deponia is a fast-paced comedy of errors and one of the most unusual love stories in gaming history. The twist-filled story takes its off-beat characters all over trash planet Deponia, a unique game world in the style of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett and Matt Groening. From Kuvaq, an improvised village built inside a giant trash heap, to the swimming black market and the dark corners of the elevated planetary railways: The new adventure game from the makers of The Whispered World, Edna & Harvey: The Breakout and A New Beginning is brought to life with detailed hand-painted backgrounds in widescreen format and top-quality cartoon animation.

  • Unique comic style with hand-drawn HD resolution 2D graphics.
  • Bizarre characters and wacky humor.
  • Challenging puzzles and hours of dialogue.
  • Unique universe in the tradition of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett and Matt Groening.
  • From the creators of the award-winning games Edna & Harvey: The Breakout, Edna & Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes, and The Whispered World.

A few annoying quirks...

The game is entertaining until it nears the end, and then you get several shortcuts built into the dialogue trees. Want to select a plan? Goal will fix that after the first option. Want to select an option before the final video plays? Don't worry, there is no amusing dialogue for any of them, just the exact same animation. This is made worst by the fact that the first part of the game feels more open. Sure, you're working towards goals, but there's enough amusing dialogue around to make it seem like you're making choices. The ending was perfectly placed for multiple possible outcomes, but because they wanted to make more games, you find yourself riding the rails and nothing you try to do makes any difference after the big reveal. You are currently also forced to skip one of the mini-games, even if you beat it, because it never actually registers the options you select (but somehow still plays a cut-scene if you have the right options)...

First impressions

After a long pause from point-and-clicks I found the Deponia series quite amusing and easy to approach. The grafics style is phenomenal in my opinion, if a tad blurri in some zoom levels at times. The voice acting is decent and the characters interesting. On the musical side I could ask no more of a game of this price point... it is marvellous and fits well into the game. Deponias narration is well written to provide player with enough clues to solve the puzzles. The game opens up slowly enough to introduce a beginner to the mentality of a point-and-click. The only complaint so far is that there is no run ability... so searching for objects in large spaces or between large rooms is a tad tedious in the long run, although moving to other rooms is assisted by a doubleclick mechanic that let's player skip most of the walking. All in all I have a feeling this series is going to be very fun and enjoyable experience.

What's bad about Rufus?

I don't know why people keep complaining about the main character's character. Sure, he's an @rse, but that's half the fun of the game! He's a useless, egomaniacal, way-underachieving idiot who thinks he's a genius, despite the fact that he doesn't know how to do anything well (except tell everyone how much better than everyone he is), but that's what makes controlling him fun! We've all worked with that kind of w@nker, and would prefer never to have to deal with that type ever again, but bear in mind that it's not /he/ who is making all the right decisions in the game; it's /you/! Watching the way he behaves is like watching The Office (the original UK version, not the cr@p one); you laugh whilst you're cringing at the reality of the @rsehole-ish character. The script and characterisations are really polished, an excellent job, and that sets the Deponia series head and shoulders above a lot of other adventure-type games. If you've played other superior humourous Adventure-type games (e.g. DoTT, Monkey Island, or Sam & Max Hit the Road), you'll love this game. At least, as with the other games mentioned, you'll have a laugh, while you're bashing your head against the wall, trying to figure out what to do next! Oh, and the press-the-spacebar-to-see-what-you-can-Interact-with feature is an absolute joy, for this kind of game!

Great fun :)

This was the first point and click game I have ever played so I was quite unsure of what I was getting myself into. Nevertheless, Deponia is a great game that has quite a few honestly hilarious moments. The only gripe that I experienced was that some of the puzzles were a bit too abstract (however, that may just be my inexperience with the genre) and required lateral thinking to a degree I was unused to. Overall however, a really fun, albeit short, game.
