Good tower defense game
Deathtrap is a good game that flew under my radar until I picked it up on the Humble Staff Picks Bundle. If you like tower defense games(Defender's Quest/Defense Grid) with a bit of Diablo you should buy it. The graphics and the music are good. Story is thread bare, the initial mechanics are good. However the later game mechanics and traps need work (you can't set the direction of the spring trap). I have gotten up to the eleventh map so far so I feel I can review it. I played the hell out of 11 maps so far. I hear there are only 13, but you can go back to play on higher tiers. It sounds repetitive, but I have gone back to get more stars and it stays engaging (some subquests also unlock). Each map is individually made rather than pieces assembled from a kit so it feels like alot effort was put into the game. Your character levels up and you get skill points you can use to enhance your character's abilities or make traps cheaper/produce more xp/get more goodies at the end of the level. You also get research points for getting stars on a map to unlock trap upgrades. The way you get experience is limited to prevent grinding. You only get xp from a map if you are NOT 5 levels higher than map number. Map 5 will not give you xp if you are level 11. It will still give you gold and crafting supplies, but I have yet to find the crafting system useful and the store is barely useful. I keep accumulating gold. To make crafting more useful I would recommend to the devs to add more recipe drops. The ugly: the game stutters alot and has crashed on me twice. When the character is loading, when you switch to the store or crafting, when you select a map to choose your tier. Never during the actual tower run where it really matters. Might be because it's on a second hard drive. The game has crashed once when I was exiting the game. The second after I beat a map. My game was saved regardless so it was only a minor annoyance.
