Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut

I finally arrived at a game crash at the exact same loading screen which made it not playable for me. That is after endless crashes before and framerate problems right from the start and searching for fixes online (DPfix etc.). You should not buy this game and GOG should be ashamed for selling it. This sucks massive. I'm sure I'd enjoyed this game...

I own this on steam and picked it up here since it was DRM free and only $2.49. Seriously one of the most compelling games I've played, it has so much charm and an amazing OST. That being said, the directors cut port is incredibly buggy, so be warned. There are patches out there to fix it, but it shouldn't need any.

Save often if you don't feel like installing a patch

No matter what I did, from trying the fan made patch to installing and running in administrator and/or compatibility and/or windowed mode to making it large address aware made this game playable past the third episode of the first chapter. I say disappointing because it's a very charming game that fills a sorely underserved niche in a unique way but if it's literally unplayable then it can't be recommended.

I would understand why would someone hate this game and rate it as low as a single star: the technical issues. The game is poorly optimized for the PC and overall is a bad port with its lack of optimization settings, control issues and system support. However, the game should not be judged through this technical lens. Such criticism should be applied to games that I'd often refer to as factory games. Games that come out every year, follow the same principle, bring next to no innovation and are often insults to a gamer's intelligence. However Deadly Premonition is not such a game. It is what one might even call "an art game". It devours the players and suck them in itself with its interesting setting, bizarre and engaging plot, well-written characters and intriguing humor. The open-world/survival horror gameplay genre also serves the game greatly. Overall Deadly Premonition is a game that those who see games for what they really are would enjoy immensely.
