Hall of Famer in the Sci-Fi/Horror Genre
I do not give this accolade lightly, particularly since I'm not really that much of a horror fan. Dead Space is one of my all-time favorites, and in a true sense a masterpiece. I bought and played it upon its original release, and it was pretty much bug free and stable out of the box, even if it pushed my trusty old Core2Duo I had then pretty hard. The design choices, story line (augmented by a couple of animated movies ,"Dead Space: Downfall" and "Dead Space: Aftermath"), atmosphere, and gritty industrial Sci-Fi environment, make this a memorable, terrifying, and unique experience. Think of it as an amalgamation of Aliens, Event Horizon, The Thing, and Pandorum. It does have some jump scares, but mainly all the adversaries are manageable, especially since you get to upgrade your gear throughout. You definitely get the feeling of being in space, in particularly due to the very, very awesome Zero-G sequences, and your requirement for Oxygen and the ability to magnetize your boots. This is pretty unique in games, and certainly was a novelty back when Dead Space was released. This is probably the fourth time I've bought the game, for one due to DRM-freeness, and because it's worth it. Of all the games published by EA over the years, the Dead Space (and Mass Effect) franchises are certainly one of the best games ever made. In fact, the only negative I have to say about Dead Space is the ridiculous control/button assignments. Being left handed I do not use WASD, I use the cursor, and surrounding keys, and Dead Space isn't very helpful there. I had to get a program called GlovePIE which I've had to use a few times since. Once setup though, everything works just fine. In conclusion, if you are a Sci-Fi/Horror fan, enjoy a good third person shooter style experience, and enjoy roaming around in beautiful, atmospheric environments, then this is for you! And remember: In space, no one can hear you scream!

Best action/horror game made.
I remember first playing this on PC at time of release and could not play beyond the opening hour because the atmosphere was that tense and shit your pants scary. About 3 years later I went back to it and stuck with it and it went on to become my favourite survival horror series in the modern era. The unique aspect of this game is all the information you need to play is on your character model. No HUD or intrusive numbers in your screen corners, health is represented by a RIG; A health bar that runs down the players spine and ammo counts are represented by holographic counters on your weapons. The gameplay itself is visceral and gory, with full dismemberment required to bring down an enemy. The game also has a great story that for players who want to immerse themselves goes beyond the game and into other media like films and books. A truly stunning game even now and recommended to all Survival Horror fans. Hope DS2 and 3 get a GoG release too. On a technical note here are some tips for the PC version. 1. Change your brightness in the settings file to a - value as the game is very bright and the ingame brightness slider does not go low enough to keep the scary atmosphere the game intends. 2. V-sync. Make sure to deactivate the 30fps in game V-Sync option and force an adaptive version through your graphics card to have 60fps. The games physics can have issues if your not at a locked framerate. 3. Have a gampad. The game has mouse control issues that I'm not sure were ever fixed. The game was intended to be played by controller anyway and is the superior experience.
