Description
You are Isaac Clarke, an engineer on the spacecraft USG Ishimura. You're not a warrior. You're not a soldier. You are, however, the last line of defense between the remaining living crew and deadly reanimated corpses. The undead have become Necromorphs; horrific zombie-alien hybrids that won't succumb to traditional means. Fortunately, your offense is equally unique, as the high-powered mining tools at your disposal provide the means to fight against the threat.

Messy monster slaying.
The Necromorphs are unlike any enemies you've seen before. Headshots do about as much damage to them as flicking rubber bands. To survive, you'll need to dismember their insect-like limbs, one at a time.

Improvised weapons.
There aren't many traditional firearms aboard the Ishimura, but there's plenty of stopping power in Isaac's toolkit. Send horizontal or vertical blasts of energy at enemies with the Plasma Cutter, remotely control a high-speed sawblade with the Disc Ripper, and fill hallways with wide swaths of destruction with the Line Gun. Switch things up with alternate fire modes, and purchase upgrades to increase ammo, power, and reload speed.

Real-time attacks.
Whatever you do, don’t drop your guard. Everything takes place in real-time. That means any action you take, whether it be reloading or digging through your inventory, gives the Necromorphs a perfect opportunity to attack. This nightmare has just begun and it’s up to you to get to the bottom of what happened here.

First time player...

Great game. The levels are well-designed and there is a tool to make sure you're always going where you need to go (which has both pros and cons...but you don't HAVE to use it). I liked the weapon variety. The monsters get kind of repetitive after a while but considering how smooth the gameplay is it wasn't a chore or anything. As other reviewers have said, play this with a controller. There is lag in the mouse that I guess I could've gotten used to...but it was annoying when I wanted to be precise. I'll just say I didn't use it long enough to get used to it. It took me an 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to complete each chapter and there are 12 of them. Some of the bosses might stump you. One thing I liked about the enemies...is there are no wrong ways to deal with them. There are options and some will be better than others depending what kind of way you'd like to approach the situation. The graphics, while dated today still hold up great for those who don't need the latest/greatest visuals. It's an atmospheric game with nice sounds. The story wasn't that interesting to me. By halfway through the game I didn't really care what was said, I just moved on to where I needed to be next. I was very impressed with this game and all things considered, this game is an 8 and maybe an 8.5 for those who enjoyed aliens, event horizon and similar movies.

Get rid of the mini game....

If you are like me, and want to pick this game up because it is on sale, then by all means do so. However do yourself a huge favor, which is make sure you set it on easy first; You see, after all this time the game carries with it one huge flaw. A Mini Game. yes, It is a Mini game where you have to shoot astoriods with a torret. Sure, that does not sound hard, but when it is on any other setting other then easy you are going to be spending hours playing, and replaying that one part. Turning up your mouse sensativity, lowering your graphic settings, turning up brightness, none of this works. I was pleasantly hyped and excitied to see more in this game, Until I reached the end of Chapter four and that mini game. If there was a way to refund this garbage I would. Anyone who tells you they completed that with no problems obviously had it on ultra low. Good luck with cheats or trying to lower the difficulty after you start a game. No Can do. Other then that, and from what I saw, the game play is wonderful and gives you a true immersion experience.Pity this feels more like a Demo then the full game this way.

Dead Time

"Why?", the protagonist presumably asks his self when encountering yet another engineering and design solution that has no apparent practical purpose, other than to make it difficult for the protagonist to proceed. You might ask yourself the same question, several times, as you progress through Dead Space. From the cliched plot (mad scientists with God delusions, multi-form aliens, a spaceship with umpteen problems) to the platform game on steroids gameplay there is little original here. Dead Space is essentially an exercise in going there to do something, then traipsing back to do something else, only to discover that now there's another problem and you have to go somewhere else to do something, and so on. A cycle of 'ho hum' that even the two main NPC characters complain about in the game. Then there's the absence of horror, and survival, in a horror survival game. The necromorphs you face are neither scary or challenging, while you are so well resourced throughout the game that you rarely encounter a situation where you have insufficient ammo, or other equipment to hand. Throw in a handful of annoying mini-games, the inability to save your game when you want to, a control system designed for controllers rather than keyboards, too many logical inconsistencies to shake a stick at, and you have Dead Space. A competent genre entry that frustrates more than it pleases.

A modern classic

The game is 10 years old, and it holds up perfectly (some technical issues that are fixed by reading pcgamingwiki aside), it is the hallmark of video game horror, and none of the sequels can match this first masterpiece. It's a must-play.

Good action game; Okay Survival Horror

I remember being introduced to this gamely vividly. I remember my brother's housemate saying 'Wow this is so tense! I cannot play it, it's too scary. You will struggle to complete it!' So there I was playing it thinking 'Wow! Will there be a horror game/movie that will make me crap myself? I have to try this!' It was underwhelming horror-wise to say the least. The issue horror wise is that the game is far too reliant on its set-pieces in that it relies on you not knowing what is going to happen next. This however is easily overcome by the player if you go around corners with your weapon drawn (as a previous reviewer has said) expecting that something will pop out and say 'Ooga booga booga!'. In addition is the fact that by the time you get midway through the game you know how to kill each enemy, what weapon is best for each situation, and triggers that notify you when something is coming and you find that they are easily defeated after you meticulously upgrade all your items which is very easy to do. Also once you master the limb severance, it becomes too methodical to kill them all. Therefore, overall, the game loses its horror edge by chapter 3. What the game is VERY good at however is throwing you in Adrenalin filled action sequences such as surviving a meteor storm, a boss battle with a gigantic wall plant and large rooms of mobs. The fact you have to balance killing enemies efficiently by severing their limbs slowing you down with making sure you hit them before they hit you makes the blood pumping and the mechanic of severing limbs certainly helps with that. Perhaps for this reason EA decided to go for a more shock scare and actiona approach with the sequel which in my opinion was far, far superior to the first and actually was a lot more tense for me. So in conclusion if you come to this game expecting a great horror experience prepare to be disappointed but if you want a action filled roller coaster ride then you have definitely come to the right place!
