Description
DEAD IN VINLAND is a survival/management game, mixed with RPG and adventure elements, about a Viking family trying their best to survive on a mysterious island.

Exiled on a faraway and unknown land, lead Eirik and his family on their quest to survive.
Manage their physical and mental health, explore the island, organize your camp and deal with other human beings. Some will help you, and some will be less... friendly.
Unveil the esoteric mysteries of Vinland. They could save your life… or lead you to your demise.

KEY FEATURES

  • Deep survival management simulation: find and gather resources, secure a supply of food, take care of the mental and physical health of your characters, fight diseases and wounds, ration your water supplies, endure the elements (storm, drought, rain…).

  • Challenging: the game is turn-based so you have time to take the best decisions, but the challenge is high! You’ll have to adapt to the crisis the game throws at you, with your own reasoning.
  • 3 modes of difficulty: if you just want to enjoy the story, we added an easy mode and, for the crazy lunatics, we added both an extreme difficulty and iron man mode, that even the developers of the game can’t beat!

  • Build your camp: expand your shelter with 18 activity stations, each one with its own mechanics. Craft more than 130 upgrades and dozens of items to give you precious bonuses. Choose well, you won’t be able to craft everything.

  • Manage a community: 14 playable characters, each one with their own strengths, flaws and stories. Influence how their relationships evolve with meaningful dialog choices, achieve one of the 7 possible romances or kick annoying characters from your camp and recruit new ones. And some surprises!

  • Explore the island: 150 areas to discover with hundreds of objects to interact with. Unveil the many secrets of the island and its beautiful, hand-painted landscapes.

  • Don’t just survive, settle: you can hunt, harvest, fish… but you can also grow a garden and breed sheep! Advanced camp stations with special mechanics.
  • Live your own adventure: complete 70 non-linear quests to reach the end of the game. Depending on your choices, learn about what happened to your characters after the end.

  • Animosity and tribute system: be “welcomed” by the infamous tyrant Björn Headcleaver and his merry band of robbers. Bend the knee and pay him weekly tributes, or rebel… and face the consequences.
  • Full RPG system: 5 health states to care for, 20 skills to develop, more than 600 character traits, 100 items to collect, 30 diseases and 20 wounds to die from… Customize your characters: choose from 5 randomly generated special traits every time they level up.

  • Turn-based tactical combat: quick and deadly 3 vs 3 battles against Björn’s minions. 5 unique playable character classes, each with its own set of fighting skills, and 5 passive classes.
  • HUGE content: more than 150 000 words - twice the size of the first Harry Potter book - telling a mature yet humorous story.

DEAD IN VINLAND is the second installment in the “Dead In…” universe, after DEAD IN BERMUDA. The two games are standalones, but you’ll learn a bit more about the secrets behind these strange islands and the general background in each game of the series.

Unexpectedly Absorbing

I impulse-bought this one, because resource management and RPGs are both my jam. I thought it would be a low-key, fun little toy to play for a bit when I have half an hour to burn. It's... more than that. Graphically, it's very smooth and consistent, with a really nice art style. Nothing looks out of place, even the things in the game that are patently out of place (more on that later). Music is... repetitive, but the loops they've picked are charming and feels very in-place. The gameplay is very simple resource management - you have people, you have resource stations. Sometimes there are Darkest Dungeon-esque fights, sometimes there are special pick-your-own-adventure events while exploring. Something that will upset a lot of players - but is a big selling point for me - is that a lot of the game, especially the fighting, is risk management. There's an RNG, it doesn't like you, and it has its grubby fingers in everything you do. I love this sort of thing, but if you don't, skip this game. It's even most RNG-run than Darkest Dungeon, more on par with XCOM. I didn't think there'd be a particularly great story - the marketing blurb says "Twice as Long As Harry Potter", so I thought it would be a clumpy mess with too much detail. But no - it's a very simple and involving slice-of-life story so far about a family that fled their home and have to rely on each other to survive, with all the friction that brings. I very quickly started to care about the characters, which doesn't happen that often. Plus, the story has taken some weird turns in the first few hours I've played. Why is there a Roman missionary on this island, suddenly? (He's recruitable, as it turns out.) Why is there a naked blue lady with altogether too many cats sitting in the middle of a field, unconscious? I'm actually getting quite involved with the story, which I didn't expect. On the whole, I'm really impressed. It's a good game, buy it if you like the RNG risk management genre.

Publishers that listen to complaints

I am a viking geek and instabuy anything remotely related to Old Norse and Viking Cultures so when this game was released I was immediately interested was absorbed in storytelling and gameplay and logged quite a few hours. But the more time progressed the more I fell victim to the RNG and decisions being taken out of my hand with a downwards spiral that let me inadvertently lose without me as a player being able to stop it. The game fell apart because I lost resources, needed sheep but could not get them because exploration meant fighting and my already damaged crew could not handle it and so on. In short: it became frustrating despite the nice graphics, interesting characters and cool story. I stopped playing it. On other platforms I saw the complaints about the relentless RNG even on easy mode and could not agree more. But with the new update all the complaints have been addressed: Now the difficulty is totally up to the player and things that are annoying or too difficult can be toned down or avoided alltogether. Kudos to the devs for listening to the complaints and making this possible! Now I can give it another try. :)

An amazing game plagued by dice rolls

Dead in Vinland is a solid game with great visuals, characters, story and runs smoothly without bugs. However, the sheer amount of dice rolls and other stupid design choices is simply cringe-worthy and rage inducing. You cannot plan ahead of time and decide which character will fill which role as their stats are randomized and the list of traits you can choose for them at every level up is random as well, so you better hope the people you wanted to do the fighting do not end up filled with gathering traits. Such system essentially forces you to save-scum, because it is way faster to do it (and much less frustrating) than having to restart over and over again because you could not turn one person into a decent a fighter. Combat is a tedious, unavoidable task that requires no strategy whatsoever. Once you figure a good combo, just keep spamming it at every encounter, prioritizing targets as necessary. You'll only have to do some thinking when you're boss fighting, and that's when you'll be pissed for not having been given better trait choices for your fighters. Or you can just save-scum until you get a huge critical hit. That works as well. A lot of foreknowledge is necessary for this game. Way too much. You can literally lose ALL the unique items you gave to a character simply because he/she decided to do "X" and if you don't ban him/her (and banning means death) from your camp, he/she will keep doing "X" and screw everything up no matter what you do. For these reasons, I cannot recommend this game, at least not at full price. Grab it when it is at least 50% off.

It's a random number generator

I bought the game on a whim because I liked the theme and the artstyle. I don't regret it, perse, but I don't feel it's gonna be a favorite of mine. Here's why. It's basically a player vs gameboard digital boardgame with some plotflavour. You have a set number of moves during your turns, which get determined by the number of people you have in your camp. Every person has traits - positive and negativ - and numerical skill/stat-values, which determine their chance of wining dicethrows. The game is basically about useing your limited moves to procure resources to develop your camp, uncovering more of the map to further the plotline, while managing to sustain a baseline of resources to keep your people working, since every action drains a stat/skill and has to be eventually replenished. It suffers from the same problems that games like " Robinson Crusoe" or "Dead of Winter", in which it all comes down to random number-generators. You can have 99% chances on winning the skillcheck and still get "snakeeyes", which both keeps you on toe, but also makes mostly the early game very dependant on luck. For example: I made maybe 6-7 remakes, before I got a decent skill/stat-distribution and wasn't fucked by droughts/storms in the early game. Once I got a baseline of buildings-up, I was able to, so far, salvage sittuations, allthough I don't know if I didn't allready "softlock" myself from going much further, seeing how luck can allways ruin a otherwise "good and conservative" run. There is a "save-on-exit"-option which you can abuse. Makeing new games is needlessly cumbersome as you have to go through 3 menues. The story, so far, is entertaining and gives a nice context to the dicethrowing. Can't say much about it for now. All in all, I should've checked to see that it's the followup for "Dead in Bermuda". I recommend to play on vacation, you'll save yourself some nerves and time.

Gets tedious

I've enjoyed the game and the history. The mechanics are simple, quite random, it's a downside that it's determined so much by chance, but i've liked the strategy involved and the history surrounding it. But what realy bothers me about this game it's the time you spend feeding and watering your people. Every night you have to feed every member of the community individually, and after more than 100 nights (you can see i played and enjoyed it much), and having the maximum pop capacity it gets very boring to attend to their needs individually. I hope they release a patch to improve this.
