Description
DAYMARE: 1998 is a third-person survival horror with hardcore survival mechanics and hard to kill enemies. It requires a strategical approach to combat and puzzles and offers a multi-character point of view on the story, revealing a deep and obscure lore.

The scene is set with a secret research facility, a deadly chemical weapon and a special security team to investigate this incident with the potential to become much more than just a security breach. Follow the steps of an elite soldier, a helicopter pilot and a forest ranger, as they play out their roles in an event that transforms one peaceful small town into a deadly zone and its citizens into bloodthirsty monsters. Take the creatures down first, before looking for any clues and evidence to bring more sense to the mess. Keep track of your itinerary, as resources are scarce in a situation like this! Anything can happen when your daymares become real…

Fans of the iconic cinematographic brands and classical gloomy survival horror games of the '90s will be thrilled, seeing how DAYMARE: 1998 recreates the atmosphere of the most beloved works from the end of the millennium and places a typical yet fresh story in the middle of it. The plot unfolds through the eyes of various characters, putting players in the shoes of different personalities that will guide them through their theories and doubts about the situation. Backtracking, managing ammo, collecting lore items, solving environmental puzzles and the overall difficulty will help players jump a couple decades back and get chilled to the bone in their first real daymare.

Main features:

  • Multi-character POV – see the story from different angles and discover the truth
  • Dreadful enemies – rendered in detail with lifelike animations and dismemberment
  • Realistic HUD – check inventory, health and position on a special piece of gear
  • Environmental puzzles – finding your way is not always easy, look for clues
  • Classic mechanics - limited ammo and save points, backtracking, collectibles, tough enemies and more
  • Modern graphics and effects – not all is classic thanks to Unreal Engine 4
  • Experience 90s – homage to the era with tons of references

boring and too slow

the menus are too rough, how difficult was it to make a simple menu and inventory. the mechanics are boring. The first chapter is so slow and boring and the worst thing is that there isn't even a save system. Not until after chapter 2. I was encouraged to play because they gave it away. but I had planned to buy it on steam, it's good that I dodged this bullet.

it was going good...

i was starting to get into the game but the radio calls bring you to a halt so what ever zombies are in the room you wont be able to get rid of them. they will just keep atacking during whatever radio call you are inganging in. (i can look past all the low budget stuff but this broke the experience for me)

Underperforms in all aspects

I havent played the RE series, but I played Dead Space and Evil Within and I love that stuff. Played it on the survival horror mode as its meant. First off - the presentation values. I dont want to say bad, but its kind of close to it. Everything looks fake or like a prop/doll. Animations are rather stuff. Face design looks sloppy and sound design isnt anything special. Im not really hung up on this particular part of games, but I can definitely say its level was no more than baseline. The story. You play various characters throughout the game. Government conspiracies, mutagen outbreak. RE stuff as far as I know. Perfectly fine, even if its a rip off. Depends how you present it. And they didnt present it well. Some character behaviours baffle me. Some story notes require you visit a website IRL. The story doesnt quite make sense and there was supposed to be an unravelling closer to the end, but I only made it somewhere halfway through. You also play as different characters, which doesnt allow you to connect to anyone properly. Now the gameplay. Very linear. Rather clunky UI. Amount of damage to kill a zombie can vary greatly, 2-5 headshots with a pistol from experience. You need to go through a tapping minigame if a zombie latches onto you. Many resources you pick up arent particularly useful. Some puzzles are confusing, one actually didnt make sense even after looking up the solution and convinced me to drop this game. I would give it 2.5 stars, since its not particularly bad, but more like painfully mediocre with some gaffs. There were plenty of 90s references, which was cool. I do believe the developers put in effort and wanted to make something interesting. But everything they did, and I mean everything, you can find somewhere else better. So unless you are really into the genre and tried everything else it has to offer, there is no point in trying this, sad to say.

Good graphics, clunky gameplay.

Good graphics, clunky gameplay. Confusing Story. Well-optimised for modern day hardware. Resolution scaler at 200% sucks a LOT of VRAM and if there is not enough VRAM, there will be horrible micro stutters. The gameplay is ok if you got this game for free. I'd hate to have purchased this game with such a slow, holding back gameplay. On normal and very hard difficulty the bullets available is low and scarce. Ofc, that would be ok if escaping the zombies could be done at 'will'. The melee is broken. Even if you are standing right infront of the zombie and melee, sometimes, the melee will just not work, causing the zombie to attack you and costing you 20% hp loss or more. If you melee in front of a lying zombie, then that does no dmg, no kick on the ground lmao You can only attack the zombie in melee if it is also on a level playing field to attack you. That's not challenging, that's just bad gameplay. Sprinting/Running system could be done better. Overall, not sth that is keeping me hooked; only wanna complete this game and uninstall it. And last but not the least, the story is AWEFUL. Way up there with the subpar gameplay. The story has no end no beginning. The voice acting is too dramatic and melodramatic for a plot which isn't even explained. Some cutscenes are way too long and the NPC characters seem to do overacting. As I said, dramatic, melodramatic.
