Description
DAYMARE: 1998 is a third-person survival horror with hardcore survival mechanics and hard to kill enemies. It requires a strategical approach to combat and puzzles and offers a multi-character point of view on the story, revealing a deep and obscure lore.

The scene is set with a secret research facility, a deadly chemical weapon and a special security team to investigate this incident with the potential to become much more than just a security breach. Follow the steps of an elite soldier, a helicopter pilot and a forest ranger, as they play out their roles in an event that transforms one peaceful small town into a deadly zone and its citizens into bloodthirsty monsters. Take the creatures down first, before looking for any clues and evidence to bring more sense to the mess. Keep track of your itinerary, as resources are scarce in a situation like this! Anything can happen when your daymares become real…

Fans of the iconic cinematographic brands and classical gloomy survival horror games of the '90s will be thrilled, seeing how DAYMARE: 1998 recreates the atmosphere of the most beloved works from the end of the millennium and places a typical yet fresh story in the middle of it. The plot unfolds through the eyes of various characters, putting players in the shoes of different personalities that will guide them through their theories and doubts about the situation. Backtracking, managing ammo, collecting lore items, solving environmental puzzles and the overall difficulty will help players jump a couple decades back and get chilled to the bone in their first real daymare.

Main features:

  • Multi-character POV – see the story from different angles and discover the truth
  • Dreadful enemies – rendered in detail with lifelike animations and dismemberment
  • Realistic HUD – check inventory, health and position on a special piece of gear
  • Environmental puzzles – finding your way is not always easy, look for clues
  • Classic mechanics - limited ammo and save points, backtracking, collectibles, tough enemies and more
  • Modern graphics and effects – not all is classic thanks to Unreal Engine 4
  • Experience 90s – homage to the era with tons of references

Really enjoying this game so far

Not really feeling the RE remake vibe, though there are some similarities, this game is very linear with little to no back tracking so far, and no storage. Started out hording ammo but it doesn't seem necessary as you end up leaving plenty behind do to inventory limitations. The only bad things I can say about the game so far is that it is very linear and lacks some polish, interacting with items can be finicky and you can't switch ammo types unless you have an empty magazine. If you play with a keyboard and mouse TAB opens the inventory, which isn't listed in the bindings.

Better than expected

I played in 1990s mode normal difficulty since I belive that's the way devs intended most people to play the game. The game plays like RE4 or TEW, movement speed and changing weapons is slow, shooting is precise, and damage is inconsistent, sometimes a zombie needs a bullet to the head to die, sometimes it takes 4, the game really rewards you for taking your time and aiming carefully (except in boss fights), specially because opening you inventory/map/archives doesn't pause the game, this issue is exacerbated by probably the most controversial feature of the game: ammo magazines, this means you can preload up to 2 magazines (per weapon) of ammo to quickly realod in the middle of a fight, and if you run out of ammo (usually in boss fights) you will be screwed, can't blame new players turning down the game because of this as the first 2 guns you get use magazines, but if you stick with it long enough you'll find out shotguns and the magnun revolver don't suffer from this limitation. The most glaring issue with the game is the boss fights as the game does a poor job to communicate your objective, the worst is the second time you face chapter 5's boss, this time is chasing you down a corridor and you are supposed to lure it all the way to the end, stun it with an explosion and backtrack to repeat the process while you wait around for an elevator, this fight is very tricky because the window of opportunity to stun it is small, and if you fail a stun you'll get one shoted, I tried for an hour, always missing a stun at some póint and dying miserably, at some point the boss was stunned and still killed me as I tried to run past it, that kind of bs broke my sanity. Overall, the game is not bad, it runs well, and is remarkably bug free (in the fountain puzzle look at the engravings on the discs, not the subtitles, they don't match) but it could definetively use some improvements, more safe rooms, maybe a slightly larger inventory and a full rework of boss fights

Good but could be better

The story is interesting, the voice acting is mediocare, the combat is clunky but all in all it's worth a play for all fans of Resident Evil type games. A banger for the buck when you get the game on sale :)

Garbage Gamebreaking Bug

The game is fun, but the second "mission" is bugged by broken terrain and you cannot get off the dock, Breaking progression and preventing completion of the game. Apparently the Steam version works, but I am not purchasing a second copy of the game.
