Description
Originally released by LucasArts in 1993 as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travel, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world!

Now, over twenty years later, Day of the Tentacle is back in a remastered edition that features all new hand-drawn, high resolution artwork, with remastered audio, music and sound effects (which the original 90s marketing blurb described as ‘zany!’)

Players are able to switch back and forth between classic and remastered modes, and mix and match audio, graphics and user interface to their heart's desire. We’ve also included a concept art browser, and recorded a commentary track with the game’s original creators Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian.

Day of the Tentacle was Tim Schafer’s first game as co-project lead, and a much beloved cult classic! This special edition has been lovingly restored and remade with the care and attention that can only come from involving the game's original creators.
  • 100% new hand painted, high resolution artwork
  • Switch on the fly between classic mode and remastered mode
  • Remastered high quality voices, sound effects and music, with emulated “iMuse” style dynamic music
  • Choose between two remastered music modes: modernized, re-voiced music, or classic music which sounds just like it did in the 90s
  • Concept Art Browser
  • Highly customizable user interface and experience, with mix and match options for old and new play styles - play with the verb bar in remastered mode, or the new verb dial in classic mode
  • Commentary track with original creators: Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian.
  • Game within a game: Includes full playable version of Maniac Mansion!

Fun game, way too short. Lacking.

I'm a massive fan of Adventure games. And I finally got around to play Day of the Tentacle. I've always been aware of the game, but never got around to actually playing it until recently. While the game still has that LucasArts charm... it feels incredibly short and lacking. The puzzles seem more simple than something like Monkey Island. The ending too was very lackluster. Overall, not

Misses the mark

There's no denying that DotT is a classic game. This conversion honours the original well. The updated graphics are pleasant, and in-keeping with the original style. (Unlike other conversions *cough* Monkey Island *cough* :) And there's where it fails. This isn't as bad as the Sierra "look both ways before you cross" situation, in that you can't die, but it's not Broken Sword level of puzzle design. The original really wasn't that great. The puzzles often don't make sense -- or, if they do, something prevents you because of some arbitrary constraint. Then there's the humour. Yeah. It really misses the mark. I got bored about 2/3 through, and ended up using a walkthrough just to have the satisfaction of seeing the ending. I appreciate that my view goes against the grain. I just can't see this standing up to modern point and click adventures. Ignore it unless you want a dose of nostalgia.

why no xp?

played this in early 90's, why are all these remasters exclude XP? Many gamers like me have an xp game machine, because it is far more backwards compatible than win 7, 8 or 10. Not a review more of a comment/question.

Great game, remake has serious flaws

The game itself is a cult classic and fun to play. By now, we should all know that. So, let's put down those rose-colored glasses and look at the remake. But the remake is something you either love or hate. I loved the remakes of Grim Fandango and the Monkey Island games, but this one is dodgy. The voice acting is HORRIBLE for most characters (except for Edna and Bernard), and I mean not even "fun cheesy", but boring and dreadful. It takes all the fun and joy right out the game. Plus, the subtitles most of the time take longer than the voice acting, resulting in a pause after some lines. So... Punchlines be gone! You can't even use the skip option, because 95% of the time it skips the rest of the dialog, and you miss the rest. And it never got fixed, thanks Double Fine. Obviously, the sound is way better than the original Soundblaster sound, as far as quality goes. But the "revised soundtrack" is dry and uninspired, sounding like some MIDI on a better soundcard. Nope, not convinced on that. But I will give them that the remake is as close to the original as you can get: graphics and animations look like they exactly redrew the original ones. That being said, I didn't really like the new "smooth" graphics and ... yeah. I switched to classic mode for the rest of the game. Sorry, but this remake is not my cup of tea. :-(
