Description
Originally released by LucasArts in 1993 as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travel, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world!

Now, over twenty years later, Day of the Tentacle is back in a remastered edition that features all new hand-drawn, high resolution artwork, with remastered audio, music and sound effects (which the original 90s marketing blurb described as ‘zany!’)

Players are able to switch back and forth between classic and remastered modes, and mix and match audio, graphics and user interface to their heart's desire. We’ve also included a concept art browser, and recorded a commentary track with the game’s original creators Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian.

Day of the Tentacle was Tim Schafer’s first game as co-project lead, and a much beloved cult classic! This special edition has been lovingly restored and remade with the care and attention that can only come from involving the game's original creators.
  • 100% new hand painted, high resolution artwork
  • Switch on the fly between classic mode and remastered mode
  • Remastered high quality voices, sound effects and music, with emulated “iMuse” style dynamic music
  • Choose between two remastered music modes: modernized, re-voiced music, or classic music which sounds just like it did in the 90s
  • Concept Art Browser
  • Highly customizable user interface and experience, with mix and match options for old and new play styles - play with the verb bar in remastered mode, or the new verb dial in classic mode
  • Commentary track with original creators: Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian.
  • Game within a game: Includes full playable version of Maniac Mansion!

Once upon a time there was a mansion!

Maniac Mansion II: Day of the Tentacle has been my favorite game for decades. I likely played it every year. It's one of those games I can recall almost every line, which, to me, is very rare. It's hard to describe in words what makes Day of the Tentacle (DotT) that great, because it's an experience like none other. I would wish that everyone would see a playthrough, or even better, play this game. People would understand what's possible with technology these days. TIME is a construct, it's not something nature abides by and all-though DotT is of course fiction, never underestimate the power of make believe and what confidence does to people. If you believe that words are magical, this is a must play. I know I haven't said a thing about the gameplay, but that's because there are other reviews that will tell you that. I'm here to tell you why this game changed my life and my view on life. Yes, it's that great. Like one of the developers say: "It's a lovely game!" Never underestimate the power of the .

Well, that was a little dissapointing.

First: the game is still great. The humor, the cartoony feeling. It's DotT as it has to be. But, the remastered part is buggy as hell. I'd get scenes where everything was a big mess. I've seen Hoagie as a wall, purple tentacle as a bowling-alley-part etc etc. Like it just at random uses textures to fill in scene-parts. If you press F1, you'll load the old textures etc, and than it loads okay. Going back to remasterd, and the bugs remain. Sounds are great. I'd like it if they were "updated" so every action on screen has a soundeffect etc. All in all: it's DotT, so it's a good game! But absolutely NOT worth the money.

9 years later...

Sadly linux native DOTT is no longer working with modern Ubuntu 24.04 LTS due to an issue with pipewire replacing ALSA audio. Would be great if this was updated. I presume the only way to get this to work will be through downloading the Windows version and running it via STEAM or Lutris.
