I really wanted to finish this game

The presentation of this game is top notch. It oozes style, the gameplay is challenging and engaging. However, towards the end the RNG starts becoming really unforgiving and demands hours and hours from you to grind, and prepare your characters from the ground up. The pacing becomes exponentially slow as you reach the end and so the required effort also becomes exponentially higher. I got tired of the game and couldn't manage myself to go through the very last two levels of the game since I couldn't stand the idea of leveling up and grinding gold just for the next relevant level.

Not hard just Tedious

I dont shy away from difficult games but this game is tedious and unfair, if you want to experience this game you'll need multiple Quality of Life mods to remove the tediousness as the developers DON'T respect your time. Many reviewers point out massive flaws and are correct but 3 aren't mentioned or emphasised enough. > The inventory space is very limited and items dont stack, a big flaw as you'll share inventory space between provisions and loot. Provisions dont carry on to the next missions and their is no workshop for crafting to ignore any loot. (https://www.nexusmods.com/darkestdungeon/mods/1152) > The RPG is surface level at best your level 6 heroes die as quickly as level 1 with no real benefits of heroes getting to level 6 except for resilience and accuracy; a good example is the "Xcom Enemy Unknown' when your units become Colonels they're unstoppable as it should be and you dont feel cheated when one of them dies. (https://www.nexusmods.com/darkestdungeon/mods/190) >The RNG is heavily skewed against you now that wouldn't be bad as you're in a nightmare town fighting eldritch horrors but your heroes are big cowards they quickly in 1 mission have mental breakdowns, heart attacks and personality flaws; you can treat your heroes and entertain them but that costs lots of money more money than any mission provides even if you want to take care of your level 6 heroes they die too quickly i.e. no point, its even worse you have a really small roaster to rotate their shifts. (https://www.nexusmods.com/darkestdungeon/mods/871) I have experimented with these mods and they work flawlessly without making the game easier just less tedious, I appreciate moders but developers and publishers (Bethesda) should rely on the generosity and skills of fans to do their job for them.

Confusing is the new hard

While the core idea is sound, the game is very repetitive. It's a grind fest. The interface is unintuitive and clunky. I expected a game that was easy to learn and hard to master, the reality was opposite of that. Once you learn the ropes and avoid ill-balanced heroes and items it's a cakewalk (a very very long and grindy one). Many systems in the game seem to exist only to add confusion and busywork. RNG is very present, also in areas you wouldn't necessarily expected it, like in food usage during adventuring. It's another one of those games that are only fun when learning them and once you understand the game mechanics there's only one good strategy and lots of grind. Another serious issue with the game is trial and error. While it's a fine mechanic that I can enjoy in fast-paced platformer (or even in a roguelike), here the cost of trying is just too high. Going unprepared for something that you have no way of knowing how to prepare to will set you back hours of progress. Note: I haven't experienced the final dungeon, cause I'd have to grind for far too long. The way I've seen other people play the entire game is basically preparing for the final dungeon. You have no way of knowing what kinds of challenges you are supposed to prepare for.

Bad, boring, repeatable, grinding game

Well i did play this game quite some time, and it has no story. Basicly all you do is pick a few heros walk around fight sometimes and grind for money and pieces to upgrade the town. Most of the time you will get bad happenings or characters get ill or even die. Most items you will find are useless and add negative effects to the character aswell. Most of the money you earn will go down the drain to remove negative effects on yout characters. Then you also have to spend on skills and Equipment upgrades. Of course you will also pay money for goin on a trip. While it can be fun at the beginning it gets more worse the longer you play. The characters will only lvl to lvl 6 and then they will also refuse doin easy trips. Boss fights can be very hard even with high lvl characters you can loose characters. You will also loose characters because of stress, that is added all time and when full, the character gets a heart attack looses all HP and will die then very fast. Really i dont know why to even play this bad game. I regret buying it.

Masochistic experience

I really gave it a try, several times. I spent hours and hours in the game, trying to combine different tactics, only to see my heroes diying all the time (and I've been playing games 30+ years). This game is super unbalanced, you're destined to lose from the beginning to the end. Well, you're never going to see the end. If only difficutly could be changed, so one might enjoy more the whole progress of recruiting and training, RPG elements..., if you have a fair chance to win, I would give it 5 stars right away. But this masochistic experience, while your party memebers are dying whatever strategy you choose... If you feed on frustration while playing games, you can add 2 more stars and you're going to have fun (are you, really?). Otherwise, be prepared to uninstall this game after a couple of hours in it. You can't win. Pity.
