Crusty, but a good time!

Purchased on Steam, played D2 first on Dreamcast and then came back to this one. A point-and-click with some great cheesy voice acting. Pretty stellar bruh.

BaD Game

Disclaimer: I didn't finish the game. In fact, I couldn't be bothered playing it for more than 40 minutes (the game should be finished within 2 hours anyway). There isn't really much to say here. As a 3D FMV horror-adventure game (played from a first person POV), this game commits all the sins its genre allows: slow, unskippable transitions whenever you walk, turn or pretty much do anything; story presentation is barely intelligible; cheap, pseudo "jump-scares" (if we want to call "slowly panning the camera to a corpse or a ghost hand from a mirror" scary); puzzles that barely require any intellect; a time limit; no save feature; devoid of interactivity; overuse of musical cues for its scary moments and so on. But the biggest problems is that it's dull, which kills any attempts at building a mood. There is barely any context to the events at hand. In the intro, you are told your father suddenly went on a murderous rampage, and you try to go talk to him to understand what is going on, only to get sucked into a portal to a gothic castle. In the first few minutes, an apparition of your father explains to you that the castle is something akin to a realm in his mind, and that you should leave. You can also see weird, cryptic flashbacks when exploring, and that's all the story you get, until very close to the end, pretty much. Having checked a playthrough, I'll only say the twist is so stupid, I'd accuse it of being written by an AI, if it had come out recently. Thanks to the fact that the characters are barely explored, it also feels totally undeserved (we know nothing of them so why should we care? More than a twist, this feels like the first introduction to one of the characters' traits). The game is effectively the amount of gameplay and story you'd exepect for an intro, stretched over 2 hours, and it's clumsily delivered. All the praise I can give it is that it accomplishes what it sets out to do, even if it's an ill-conceived idea. Nostalgia is mandatory.

Great Game! Happy To Finally Finish it.

I bought a PS1 long box copy of this game about a year ago. But it froze on an early cutscene. It's nice to be able to finally play through the whole game. And what a game. For those looking for fast action gameplay this is DEFFINETLY NOT your cup of tea. This game is about slow, immersive exploration. And deep creepy atmosphere. If that's what you're after then this game is prefect for you. I only have two complaints about the game. First, The walking is on rails and not all connect to all points in the room. So for example you may have to go all the way from one side of the room to another just to get to a table in the middle of the room. You get used to it. But it really breaks the immersion sometimes. Second. As I'm sure you've all noticed this DOS version of the game is interlaced and has scanlines. Much Like most Classic FMV titles like Phantasmagoria. But unlike Phantasmagoria you cannot adjust the settings to run without the scanlines. But they honestly aren't that bad and you get used to them after a few minuets of play. Though if they bother you all other versions of the game run without scanlines. (As far as I know.) This game comes HIGHLY reccomended!

Oh! FMV! Multimedia experience!

D promised to be a moody game that followed the steps of The 7th Guest but being more tied to the psychological horror (true psychological horror I mean). I remember the demo for it was quite impressive, showing you the incredible intro and the first shocks. Old style CGI cannot quite diminish the cinematic quality of that intro that manages to be a psycho thriller and lovecraftian/clivebarkian horror at the same time. Oh, but you know what? There was barely any other gameplay apart from the promised in the demo. I think there was one or two puzzles (one or two, not joking) and the rest of the game is just clicking to "enjoy" non interactive scenes that slow the pace (with a time limit!). The developers/producers had a great setup and did not know what to do to make a game out of it, and the effort really feels poor and rushed and extremely short. Recommended only as a curiosity artifact, to know what was the deal with FMV (full motion video) games and why they end up being a dreaded bunch.
