Extremely well written with significantly different paths and outcomes in several quests.
Dogtown offers tons of parkour and challenging combat.
Lots of new vehicles, weapons, outfits and other stuff.
Fantastic soundtrack.
A Must have!
I migh've been a bit dissapointent by the state of game in the early days of its release but its not the case - not anymore. After all patches, although i can still see bugs, i can honestly say its one of the best games i've ever played. Im not really a fan of cyberpunk but this game bought me. I can see that there are areas where it can be better but overall experience is pleasure.
Speaking about the Phantom Liberty: its a game within a game. The best expansion there is. At first glance the new area - Dogtown doesn't seem to be too big but it's far more sophisticated. In terms of how many quests we have, how many closed areas (and size of them), how much complexity there is to quests, the story, characters and overall distopian atmosphere - its all there. Worth every penny and simply unavoidable if you want to have full CP 2077 experience.
Expansion adds also more difficulty and some great new boss battles. Many of the side quests are finished with somekind of boss fight.
In summary:
* top notch graphics, music and sound design
* top notch story and characters
* best quest design
* excellent gun play, stealth and combat
* overall feeling of enormous city to explore with a lot of details
* very cheap in comparison to other AAA titles
Minuses?
* still bugs - but not crashing ones
* to some extent overcomplicated percs system
For me? 10/10
I played through the expansion main quests and the side quests, and it generally felt like more of the same: interesting and memorable characters taking you through an engaging story.
You engage in story missions, which take you through quiet locations and shooting galleries. There is a lot of idle time, where you sit and gawk at your character talking to other characters. Occasionally you get to pick a response, which most of the time is flavour. Even if there is a meaningful choice, it felt superfluous. There were many sections with no combat or dialogue, but pure action movie spectacle.
I wasn't overly impressed with this new expansion story. From the start, helping the president wasn't on my agenda. I was constantly frustrated that my character had to go with clearly deceitful actions of other characters, whom I didn't like most of the time.
Many fun side quests too, although them pretending to be "gigs" was confusing. In the base game gigs were mostly <5 min quick combat activities. There are some here too, but they are marked as "increased criminal activity" now. Nothing as memorable as Sinnerman or Panam/Rogue/River sidequests.
The combat system had a major rework after 2.0 patch. As a returning player, the first impression was that this is a completely new system. On a second glimpse, it's still mostly the same deal.
I got an impression that the weaponised vehicles would be a major part of the expansion, but it's mostly cookie cutter side quest content. You can shoot from regular cars now, too, and enemies will force you to, but it isn't as fun as the ground combat. The cars still feel floaty and lightweight, despite all the reworks.
Some of the other additions are very superfluous. You can now buy apartments, or take a metro line. I tried it and it was clear it's not interesting in any way. You sit on a train and stare at a window. I don't know why would I bother. The fast travel system was fine as it were.
A beautiful game with a captivating, thrilling, and mature story that has finally managed to showcase its potential. The hardest difficulty is a bit more challenging, which suited my playstyle and added more weight to the story. The new skill tree is more dynamic and challenging, rewarding good combinations, even though it's still at a moderately complex level. Play it. This game and this expansion are unbelievably good.
If you were hoping for the CDPR team to bring it with the expansion, they did. Beautiful and well thought out locations abound, Idris Elba acting his face off, a compelling story that elevates the base game, with skill tree options and gameplay that feels good. It's nice to see this game live up to it's potential with Phantom Liberty and the 2.0 update. Brosephs and glitter for everybody!
