This game.. everything about it is a drag. The story is incredibly depressing, the gameplay is just not fun, romance options are either ugly, petty, or annoying, driving feels strange and drifty (you're quicker walking), and the game is _still_ buggy _years_ after release.
I was excited to play this game because I believed all the negative reviews were just being dramatic, but now I know everyone was telling the truth.
I bought it recently, so I don't know or care about earlier, buggy versions. I loved it from start to finish, it was everything I hoped it would be and the only bad thing about it is that it is over.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a game I've spent a lot (maybe too much) of hours on. It's an immersive experience that comes in many forms, but it's hard to deny that CD Projekt's strengths were properly leveraged:
The characters with explicit narratives (Goro, Kerry, Judy, Panam, Johnny, River, Wakako, etc.) that you encounter are mostly coherent and interesting. You could fault them for getting too attached to the character, but isn't a little heroism necessary?
Environmental storytelling is also very rich. If you get lost in the city streets, on its rooftops, or in abandoned buildings, you sometimes find the remnants of events that make the city feel alive. Some of these encounters are contracts, while others happen by chance during a simple stroll.
This game also respects the continuity of events, as was the case in The Witcher 3. When something happens, its consequences affect the game, and some locations and environments change. I advise those who claim that CP2077 is the same after 10 hours or 100 hours of gameplay to pay more attention to the scenery, conversations, and announcements.
Of course, Cyberpunk 2077 is far from perfect, even though the game has been extensively patched, stabilized, and so on. However, its ambition to immerse us in an ultra-immersive adventure in a Cyberpunk-era city makes its imperfections more noticeable than in a (also excellent) game like Pathfinder WotR, which was also in a sorry state at launch.
Thus, the NPC clones, erratic traffic in the city at certain times, NPCs getting scared for no reason, or stealth occasionally behaving chaotically are unfortunately linked to the choices made to create this unique experience. CP2077 has the flaws of its ambitions, but few games can boast of offering us something that no other game has offered us so far: the incredible experience of a future we will never know but is worth knowing.
So let me start by saying that I have been playing the game since its initial launch in 2020. I was one of the poor saps who preordered on last gen consoles, and then immeditaly repurchased on PC. I also have loved this game from the beginning, despite all of its flaws. Of which there WERE many..
But it's only now, 3 years after release, with around 700 hours logged between Xbox and PC, and two 100% playthroughs that I am leaving my review. The reason being that the game finally feels like it is in the state that we were expecting at launch. It's technical state is uncomparable with any other open world on the market, not only in beauty, but in the little details scattered throughout Night City. Try to find Neo ;)
The police AI is an awesome addition, though you have to work for it if you want MaxTac to show up. The driving and gun-play feel much more refined, and the perk trees have been completely redone. This isn't even to mention the galore of little changes littered throughout the game. Some things are as small as slightly altered lines of dialouge, and some are as impactful as a full animation up-lift for Johnny Silverhand.
Is the game perfect? NO! Is it in a state that I can recommend it to anyone who loves these types of games, genres, or studio? ABSOLUTELY!! The developers have stuck with the game and accomplished a redemption arc that hasn't been seen in the industry since No Man's Sky! If you held off on this for the last 3 years due to the bugs and crtisisms, then now is the time to jump in and test the waters out. I promise that you're in for something truly special.
