First and foremost, I can say this game fails to live up to even an ounce of hype it ever generated. It's not a really good RPG and it's not a really good shooter.
There is no "choice" in how the story progresses, only an illusion of choice. The only "choice" you have during conversations is to hear more fluff dialogue - everything progresses down the same path. The combat is also incredibly dull with the enemies acting like bullet sponges and leaving behind 2 - 4 pieces of loot when they die. You'll find yourself swapping your main weapon/armor after every 1 - 2 combat encounters, making crafting completely pointless. It's really reminiscent of borderlands, except worse. The difficulty slider does nothing other than to make enemies even bigger bullet sponges. The AI is also just as braindead.
Night city is also incredibly detailed - but theres nothing to do in it. It only serves as a backdrop for progressing the story which has you going from one quest giver to the other. The random NPCs you see walking around serve absolutely no purpose and only act as window dressing. They have no routines or set paths so the city comes off even more lifeless than it already is. It also didn't take me long to see the same looking NPC walking around 2 minutes later.
This game might have been good if it came out 10 years ago. It's a mish mash of ideas other games have done better. Want an actual RPG? Play divinity os 2 or the witcher 3. Want a looter shooter? go play borderlands. Want an open world shooter with a good story? Go play gta
The game is also really buggy and glitchy. Had to reload my save around 3 times to fix some random game breaking bug. I played for around 6 hours before I gave up and uninstalled. If you're on the fence, I'd wait until the game goes on sale and/or has more content.
Yet another company I had huge respect for has squandered all the good will they've earned through the years.
Thus far I've been spared the worst bugs but make no mistake; there are plenty of bug and glitches...
The game also feels lackluster in many areas; no post creation customization, lacks significant dialogue trees and story paths, many parts of the game just feel incomplete.
Long story short; the game simply is not finished. It's a motorcycle with no seat and one wheel.
That being said; It's a very nice motorcycle...
When the game works it's beautiful, engaging, fun, immersive and just feels amazing to play.
Needless to say this game has me torn...
The game that was released is a broken mess and the decision makers at CDPR should be ashamed for releasing it in this state.
That is another thing to remember; this is not the fault of the developers, they have no say in when and in what state the game is released.
This is another example of suits ruining things for everyone...
On the other hand I'm certain that this game will be absolutely amazing once it's finished through patches and updates.
Question is if it's too little, too late...
This was the first game I've pre-ordered in years simply because it's CDPR, sadly it will be the last time I pre-order a game and even though I still want to like CDPR the respect I had for them is now gone.
This review was played entirely on 1.06, so I missed any crap before, and any fixes after. I also intentionally didn't watch many trailers, interviews, gameplay videos, etc. I went into the game expecting an Open World RPG, and that's generally what I got.
From a technical standpoint, the game was fine for me. I had 3 crashes in about 100 hours, and 2 of those were when loading a saved game (saves were fine), and the other was when exiting the game. There are plenty of bugs, but I didn't see anything game breaking. I missed some side quests because of bugs (I assume...the next step never triggered despite waiting the appropriate time), but they were minor.
The world building was excellent, and is both the best and worst part of the game. It is the best because the game sets you up for some great things. The big corporations (Arasaka and Militech) are on the verge of war, the Mayor of Night City just died and there is a new election coming, advertisements everywhere, the different areas of the city are actually different, and you can tell what are of the city you're in just by looking around.
It's the worst because none of that really matters. You can attack Arasaka or Militech all game, and nothing changes. Despite having some quests regarding the Mayoral election, you change nothing. Any urgency from the main quest is pure illusion. You can do side quests forever despite being in a serious time crunch to complete the main quest.
The characters are memorable, but I wasn't emotionally invested in them. The plot is well written, but is limited to just the main character. I don't need to save the world, but if I'm going to attack gangs' clubs and work with mayoral candidates, I want to see the long lasting impact of those decisions.
I played the game to completion, and did most of the side quests/gigs/hustles, which means I enjoyed the game overall. But it didn't do anything better than previous games in this genre.
I love the setting. But that's it. I don't even care about it being buggy as hell, but the story is short and there is nothing to do on the map after like 55hours ingame. Just a boring mess.
Shame on CD Projekt Red.
