Great! But flawed

A visually fantastic game, truly a marvel to look at, with super detailed environment and superb world that can be traversed vertically just as well as horizontally and offers plenty of great details. I love to just run around and explore, and this game has tons of exploring to offer. Night City feels alive, breathing, more than any game in its genre. But you can only partly participate. Most of your interaction is done through quests, otherwise there's little to do. Main questline is fantastic! With many good characters and excellent writing. It offers a solid theme, many happy, fun, sad, tense moments, and hints at many deep topics that really made me think. Great! I even enjoyed a bunch of the sidequests, for the most part, they are done very well. But they bring nothing new. Apart from the main questline, which is obviously a carefully crafted story with little to no input from the player, you are just along for the ride, most sidequests revolve around you killing a bunch of goons or delivering an item somewhere. A bit disappointing, considering the huge potential of a sci-fi world in such a huge city. The AI is alright, not very good or bad, just alright. The menus are obviously made for controllers, which is a shame, because this sacrificed many QoL options for PC players, and the menus feel clunky and old. Overall, I like this game. I'm having a great time playing it. It definitely didn't hold up to the unrealistic, sky-high expectations of the internet, but judging it by what it is, it's a solid game that does many things right, and has great potential. However, I feel like it wasn't ready. The bugs and issues are one thing (I haven't experienced any crashes myself, and FPS hasn't dipped below 50), but clearly there are aspects where the game feels hollow and barebones. It could have been fantastic, magnificent, revolutionary. But it's not. It has great story, but gameplay-wise, stays in line with many older open-world shooters, which is a pity.

Perfect blend of Deus Ex, Skyrim, GTA

Full disclosure, I loved Human Revolution and Mankind Divided. And I've never been much for fantasy settings, even though I love open world RPG's. So for me, this is pretty much the best game ever. I'm in awe. The character creation suite alone is just so perfect. And it has so much of that tabletop open-ness. The dialog isn't super expansive, but still. At least there is choice that effects how the narrative plays out. And it's nice that the way you choose to play the game also effects how the narrative develops. And it's nice that the way you play also effects the way your relationships with other characters develop. As much as I loved the FF7 remake, the sad thing about linear games is that Cloud will always be friends with Barrett and Tifa and Aereith. FF7 is my favorite game of all time, but still, it would be nice to be able to have a little more player choice involved. This game sounds and looks great. The main drawback seems to be how demanding it is, and that it won't even run on the PS4 and Xbox One generation. That is rough. And very unfortunate. I play using an Xbox One controller - and for me that's working really well. But the PC controls should absolutely be remap-able. Hopefully that gets patched up soon. This game to me is next gen personified, and has me absolutely ecstatic about the future of gaming. But it's absolutely valid, all of the outrage expressed over it's inability to run on the previous generation type machines.

Style AND substance

In progress review (30+ hours played) This could actually be called an immersive sim, I feel really invested into my character and the world in general. I am playing on hard with Xbox controller, and I messed up my skill tree a bit at the start. That resulted in some fights being quite challenging. However, I have specialized in reflexes now and acquired better cyber deck. So now starting kick ass no matter the odds. I am enjoying every minute of it and feel like the hard difficulty is actually the most enjoyable for people like me, who like slower progression. Visuals are beyond fantastic, out of this earth really. Soundtrack has max points in cool. So there's style! And according to rule book when there's style, substance is not that important... However, that's not the case with this game. I applaud CDPR for taking this one step further. I really like how the questlines progress, something entirely different form what am used to e.g. in Ubisoft open world formula. Moreover, every little quest and gig seems tailored to convey a meaning, in a form of little story, which ties nicely into a larger world and CP lore in general. I have not seen this level of quality writing in many games since the Witcher 3 (maybe Deus Ex: Mankind Divided comes close, since in that game the best stories were in side missions). I started to play with patch 1.04. Running it on a rig, which matches recommended requirements perfectly. I am able to run on high to ultra settings with 1080p without breaking a sweat. I did encounter some minor bugs, several visual glitches, once had to reload a save to progress further; but nothing extraordinarily bad, which I have not already seen a hundred times in other AAA games. Game runs fantastic, load times are short and I am not even loading from SSD. I want to give all dev a huge thanks for the work they have put in: CP 2077 is nothing short of astonishing! And the negative sentiment will fade away when more and more things are fixed and polished.

Great game despite bad publicity

Honestly, this is my favourite RPG in years. The story is gripping, the open world is engaging and well designed, and the gameplay is fun with lots of room for expression and creativity. Playing on a 5 year old, low end gaming laptop (7700hq, 8gb ram, 1060 6gb) I've had only two instances of the game crashing, and have enjoyed smooth gameplay outside of those experiences. I really hope all of the negativity around the release doesn't lead to CD Projekt abandoning the IP - I could keep adventuring in this universe for years quite happily.
